No one had expected Layla’s squad to pull such a bold move-splitting into two teams, with one group hunting starbeasts to rack up points while the other held off the Crown Squad.
Prince Atlas was one thing-his power was practically bottomless. But that Layla girl, how was she killing starbeasts so fast?
Annie had been riding high at first. She rarely got to cut loose like this. Growing up constantly compared to her cousin had really done a number on her confidence, which was exactly why she’d given up trying.
But running with Layla? Now that was a thrill ride. She was practically purring with excitement. She spun around, ready to brag about taking down a mid-tier starbeast solo, only to find three of them lying at Layla’s feet. All mid-tier.
Annie’s jaw dropped. Fine, fine-no point competing with a freak of nature. She’d just stick to one-upping her dear cousin Kierra.
One minute left on the clock. Wallace was the first to go down. And somehow, he’d managed to take Chaim with him.
When Kierra’s shot hit his energy module, the big guy just launched himself straight at Chaim, smashing into his already-failing core. Double knockout.
Meanwhile, Alex had been tangling with Wayne in a brutal slugfest. His mech was battered to hell, but right after Wallace and Chaim went down together, Wayne finally finished him off.
Alex lay on the ground, blood and sweat streaking his face, laughing like a maniac. Best fight he’d had in ages.
Wayne frowned. ‘What’s with this team? They’re all a bunch of lunatics.
Meanwhile, November, facing two attackers alone, didn’t have a single scratch on him.
Romeo’s mech arm was broken. He was fuming. How could he, a trooper, not even take down a commander, especially with a helper?
November’s black mech remained pristine, moving with effortless grace. Tomas realized his opponent’s true strength, but his own energy was nearly depleted.
“November,” he said over the open channel, “Layla isn’t out yet, is she?”
“Of course not. My Star would never be out.” Atlas answered.
The black mech leaped high, one foot coming down on Romeo’s red-and-black machine. With a sickening crunch, Romeo’s mech leg snapped.
“My suit!” Romeo howled in anguish.

Tomas moved to block, trying to free his teammate, but the next moment, a fist slammed into his own cockpit. His entire mech was sent flying backward.

A wave of shock washed over him. How could a freshman this powerful exist, and he knew nothing about him?

Tomas’s mech crashed to the ground. He wasn’t seriously injured, but he remained still for a long moment.
The black mech walked past him. Tomas muttered, almost to himself, “A commander with combat skills this high.
November’s eyebrow arched slightly behind his mask. “Who told you a commander’s combat stats have to be weak? In war, does the enemy spare you because you’re the commander? Idiot. The commander is the first target.
He strode away, his steps quickening. Separated from his mate for too long, he missed his Star terribly.
Minutes later, Layla, who had already exited through the finish gate, saw November sprinting toward her. The light in his eyes was brighter than the stars.
She pressed her lips together, suppressing the flutter in her chest, forcing her expression to remain as calm as
ever.
‘Don’t get attached.’ She told herself. That was the only thing she could hold onto now.
Layla’s team unquestionably took first place. Even with two members eliminated, the result stood.
Crown Squad, despite losing Chaim, still outscored the third-place team, securing second.
But no one on their team was happy. In contrast, every member of Layla’s team was buzzing. Even the usually aloof Alex, eliminated by Wayne at the last moment, wore a proud, bright smile.
He was completely won over by November and Layla now. After arranging to meet up back at the academy, he left with Wallace for their dorms.
Annie seemed like a cat on catnip, beyond excited. She wanted to grab Layla and share the joy, but a dangerous glint in November’s eyes made her think better of it.
“I’m exhausted! Gotta crash!” she declared, making a swift escape.
With all the third wheels gone, November was satisfied. He was about to cozy up to Layla when Crown Squad’s five members approached head-on.
November was speechless.
‘Should’ve hit them harder. Should’ve knocked them all flat.’ He thought.
Tomas stopped in front of them, his expression serious. “I have a few questions. Can you answer them?”

Chapter 39
:
November irritably ground his teeth. Layla glanced at him, then said to Tomas, “Go ahead.”
“Initially, were you planning to corral starbeasts and overtake us at the last second?” He asked.
“Yes.” Layla answered.
“Why did you change tactics?” He wondered.
“Because you’re not stupid.” Layla said.

Tomas was taken aback. He looked at Layla-or rather, at Layla, who was now partially blocked by November.
November, impatient to be alone with his mate, snapped, “Spit it out. Don’t waste time!”
Romeo and the others, already sour about losing, bristled at his tone. Who did this guy think he was?
But Tomas held them back, his gaze on November. “You could have held off all five of us by yourself back there, couldn’t you? So why let two of your teammates get eliminated?”
“They needed the practice and the setback. Same as all of you.”
November’s patience was totally run out. He took Layla’s hand and walked away, leaving Tomas and his team
in silence.
Finally, Romeo broke it. “Who does he think he is? A teacher? The director? Lecturing us?”
Chaim chimed in, “Exactly! He just won once. Big deal! If we’d known their score, we never would’ve let them catch up!”
Wayne, as usual, stayed quiet. But Kierra seemed less arrogant than usual, visibly shaken by the defeat.
Tomas had no words to comfort or guide them. He himself was grappling with the biggest blow.
Meanwhile, November, having pulled Layla a good distance away, found his hand being pushed away.
She avoided his wounded look. “November, we need to talk. Your private quarters.”
“Yes!” November nodded.
One moment, hurt by her pulling away. The next, his eyes lit up again.
‘Of course. My Star was just too shy to hold hands in public. He knew it.
