Chapter 45
Chapter 45
Layla was so angry that she actually laughed.
‘Can Xanthe really be this shameless?’ Layla thought. ‘Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Every time her master gave her something, it was always packed in the same kind of metal box, marked with his signature symbol, a tiny flame.
So when Layla slipped into Xanthe’s room earlier, she found it almost instantly.
This suite used to be Layla’s, so she knew exactly where to stash anything important.
Sure, it wasn’t exactly polite to just barge into Xanthe’s room and start searching, but when it came to someone like Xanthe, Layla figured manners were wasted on her. Xanthe didn’t deserve any courtesy.
Harper couldn’t help feeling conflicted when she saw Layla, but the moment she caught sight of Xanthe’s red, teary eyes, her heart went out to her daughter.
Harper said, “Layla, what’s going on? Did you take something from Xanthe? If you wanted it, you could’ve just asked; no need to take it behind her back.”
Layla looked at Harper, her voice steady. “Harper, you didn’t even ask me what happened, and you’re already sure I took Xanthe’s stuff?”
Harper was momentarily speechless, her eyes a little dazed.
Nolan, who was a few steps behind, came downstairs with a frown. “Mom, you’ve got it all wrong.
“Layla didn’t take Xanthe’s stuff. Xanthe took something that was sent to Layla. Layla was just taking back what was hers.”
Harper blinked. “Oh, so that’s what happened.”
Xanthe was fuming, her face flushed with indignation. “But Layla shouldn’t just barge into my room without asking. That’s so rude. If something goes missing, who am I supposed to complain to?”
Harper found herself agreeing with Xanthe.
She was about to speak, but Layla cut her off. “Xanthe, you took my package without asking, and you even snuck into my room and went through my optical computer. So, who’s the rude one here?
“Obviously, it’s you,” Xanthe snapped.
“Enough,” Karter said sharply.
Karter said coldly, shooting Xanthe a glare before turning to Layla, “Layla, are you hungry? Let’s get something to eat.”
“Okay,” Layla replied.
Nolan let out a sigh of relief.
He was really getting fed up with Xanthe’s attitude and his mom’s blind favoritism.
Good thing his dad was always fair.
But Layla knew Karter’s so-called fairness wasn’t real. He was only being nice because, for now, his ex-adopted daughter was still useful to him.

Xanthe just stood there, dumbfounded, watching Layla and the rest walk off without her. Her eyes were burning with rage, tears spilling down her cheeks.
Xanthe was about to explode.
‘Why am I always the unlucky one?’ she thought bitterly. ‘First, the James family delays the wedding, and now I come home just to get pushed around by Layla?
‘I already kicked Layla out of the Sullivan family, so why won’t she just disappear? And now even Dad’s siding with her.
The more Xanthe dwelled on it, the more wronged she felt. She spun around and rushed to Harper, who was still stunned, sobbing pitifully.
She said, “Mom, what’s happening? Why is Dad suddenly treating me like this? Did Layla tell him something awful about me?”
Harper rushed to comfort her daughter, but barely got a couple of words out before the butler came over, bowing respectfully. “Mrs. Sullivan, Duke Karter says it’s time for dinner. Please come to the dining room.”
Karter was the kind of strict family head who’d called Layla back tonight just so everyone could sit down and pretend to be one big happy family at dinner.
So the way Xanthe acted and what she said earlier had left him pretty unhappy.
Xanthe was just too crushed today. When Harper called her to dinner, she shook off her mom’s hand, hid her tear-streaked face, and stormed back to her room.
Harper felt helpless, but she didn’t dare defy Karter, so she could only turn and head to the dining room.
Once she got there, she asked the butler to bring some food up to Xanthe’s room.
Karter frowned. “What’s up with Xanthe? She was full of energy just a moment ago, now she won’t even come out for dinner?”
Harper quickly explained, “Xanthe’s been upset all day. The James family decided to postpone the wedding because they’re worried it’ll mess with their studies.
“They want to wait until Xanthe’s done with her Imperial Academy exams before having the wedding.”
Karter’s frown deepened.
He didn’t look too happy about it, either.
Layla, meanwhile, was totally chill, chowing down like nothing had happened.
The James family had always been this way. They never liked Layla, always looked down on her just because she wasn’t one of the Sullivan family.
Now, they were snubbing Xanthe, too.
They claimed it was about school, but the truth was, they were just scared Xanthe wouldn’t make the cut for Imperial Academy.
Karter thought, ‘I’ll have to have a word with the James family about this later. But I should ask Xanthe if she can actually get into Imperial Academy. No, she has to get in. There’s no room for failure.’
But for now, Karter let it go and turned to Layla. “Layla, I heard you really crushed it during training?”
“Not bad.” Layla replied.

“First place, that’s seriously impressive. I heard you even managed to beat Tomas?” Karter said.
Layla lowered her eyes a bit and said softly, “Guess I just got lucky, that’s all.”

“Doesn’t matter if it was luck or not, you still proved you’re really outstanding. So, ever considered transferring to the Command Division? I can talk to the principal for you,” Karter said.
Layla took a sip of water and shook her head. “No, I’m good where I am in the Mech Engineering Division.”
“You’re still too young to get it, Layla. What’s so special about the Mech Engineering Division? No matter how talented you are, you’ll just be another mech engineer.
“But if you transfer to the Command Division, you could end up leading an entire starfleet as a commander,” Karter said.
Karter used to be a starfleet commander, but after getting injured while fighting void raiders, he had to retire and take a desk job.
Now that his son was carrying on the legacy, he couldn’t be prouder.
But if Layla could become a top commander too, that would make him even happier.
Then, both Nolan and Layla could support Atlas together. Once Krish took the throne, the Sullivan family’s reputation would skyrocket.
Karter’s mind started to wander, getting ahead of himself.
‘What if Layla ended up as one of Krish’s wives?’ he mused, the thought making him almost giddy.
There might only be one crown princess, but Krish could have a whole bunch of wives.
The more Karter let his imagination run wild, the more hyped he got, until Layla cut in, her tone cool and steady. “I’ve decided, I’m not transferring divisions. I’ve finished eating. Thanks for the meal, but I’m leaving now.”
Layla wiped her mouth, got up, and left without another word, leaving Karter completely stunned.
His expression soured in an instant.
Nolan quickly got to his feet. “Dad, Xanthe really got under Layla’s skin tonight. She actually seemed in a good mood when she agreed to come for dinner.
“Please don’t be upset. I’ll go

with her and try to talk some sense into her.”
Karter looked at his responsible son, his expression softening a bit. He nodded. “You’ve always been the closest to Layla.
“Go have a good talk with her. She’s still young and doesn’t really understand how important her field is. We can’t let her talent go to waste.”
