Chapter 64
‘Don’t mention it. Honestly. I never liked Vanessa and her gang anyway. I’m heading back to the dorm. Layla said.
She said goodbye to her two friends and turned to walk back to her dorm
Layla knew her friends were worried about her. Truth was, even though she was feeling a little down, the worst was already

Back at her dorm, Layla took a cold shower, changed out of her ripped training uniform, fixed herself up, and went to class as if nothing had ever happened.
Meanwhile, over in the administrative office, Atlas watched Layla leave and immediately turned to head out himself.
But Krish hurried after him.
“Atlas, where are you off to?” Krish called out.
“Heading back to military headquarters, Atlas replied.
“Great, I need to go there, too. Let’s go together,” Krish said.
Atlas stopped in his tracks, turned around, and snorted coldly. “Actually, never mind. I just changed my mind. I’m going home. Since you came with Duke Karter, just go with him.”
Atlas didn’t wait for a reply and walked off.
Everyone knew Atlas was famous for his bad temper. Sure enough, he didn’t even bother to give Krish any respect.
Davis was practically praying for Atlas to leave. When Atlas finally walked out, Davis breathed a huge sigh of relief.
Krish didn’t let the rejection faze him. He just nodded to Davis and the others, then walked out without a word.
Karter looked pretty sour.
Once Karter and Krish were inside the aero-vehicle, he rushed to explain, “Your Highness, Layla’s just a kid. Don’t be mad at her, okay? She’s probably still hung up on that thing Xanthe did without meaning to.”
Krish suddenly looked up. “Did you know Atlas brought her home?”
Karter was stunned. “When did that happen? No way. His Highness Atlas’s temper is legendary, and Layla is just as stubborn. No way she’d ever cozy up to him.”
Krish didn’t say a word, but he remembered how Atlas had acted back then, and what Angelina had told him.
No way. I don’t buy it, Krish thought.
The whole incident at Imperial Academy, what with all those noble families involved and both princes making an appearance, spread like wildfire and landed right in Dakota’s lap.
Dakota had always had a soft spot for his eldest son, Krish. One could tell just by the way he treated Krish as the future heir.
As for Atlas, if he didn’t have that exceptional talent for command, Dakota probably would’ve just let him run wild and do whatever he wanted.
Every week, Dakota and Leilani would share a meal together. As they sat down to eat, Dakota suddenly brought up the whole

Imperial Academy incident.
“Leilani, since when did Atlas start recruiting talent?” Dakota asked, sounding a bit surprised.
Leilani arched an eyebrow. “Since when does Atlas go around recruiting anyone?”
Dakota frowned. “You haven’t heard about what happened at Imperial Academy? That freshman, Layla, the one who’s top of her class, got into a fight and ended up injuring a few other students.
“Their parents showed up to make a fuss, but in the end, Atlas stepped in and took care of it. Don’t tell me Atlas already knew Layla before all this?”
Leilani’s eyes widened with interest. “Layla’s that strong? She managed to take down several people all by herself?”
Dakota’s mouth twitched. “That’s not the point. The real question is, why is Atlas getting so close to her?”
“Because they’re married,” said Leilani.
“What?” Dakota blurted out, completely stunned.
Leilani couldn’t help but find it amusing, watching this king with his blatant double standards.
‘Isn’t he just worried that if Atlas gets too strong, he’ll end up challenging Krish for the throne?’ Leilani thought.
In fact, Leilani had told her son since he was young that being king wasn’t as great as it seemed. Whoever sat on that throne would have to give up a lot.
But Atlas never had much ambition anyway; he cared more about mech suits than he ever did about power.
‘Seriously, even with Atlas and me both being like this, he’s still coming on so strong. Isn’t that a bit much?’ Leilani thought to herself.
Leilani looked up at Dakota, who was still staring in shock. “Let’s not make this public for now, but they really did get married. Can I count on you to keep this under wraps, Your Majesty?”
“Wait. Atlas actually married that orphan girl? Why would he do that?” Dakota blurted out, still in disbelief.
Leilani couldn’t help but wear a sarcastic smile. ‘He’s always going on about her being just an orphan, but now that he sees how talented Layla is, he suddenly wants her on his side.
‘Honestly, this king is just as opportunistic as his eldest son, Krish. They’re both always snobbish.
“They like each other, so they got married. There’s no big reason behind it. I just hope you can keep it quiet for now, Your Majesty. They haven’t even decided when to hold the wedding,” Leilani said.
Seeing how confident Leilani was, Dakota couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.
Sure, Layla was impressive, but at the end of the day, she was just a student with no connections or family backing. Even her adoptive father, Karter, was more in Krish’s camp anyway.
Honestly, Atlas marrying that girl was actually a great thing.
Dakota said with concern, “They haven’t really figured things out yet, but as Atlas’s mom, you should help him get everything set up.
“Even if Layla doesn’t have much of a background, she’s still joining the Zimmer family. When the wedding happens, we can’t let it look cheap or disappointing.”
“Of course,” Leilani replied smoothly, wiping her lips with a napkin before getting up. “Enjoy your meal, Your Majesty. I’m

done here.
Dakota was left speechless.
Truth was, the king and Empress had always kept things strictly formal between them. There was never much real affection
But after hearing that news, Dakota felt way more at ease. Even if Leilani was a little blunt, he didn’t mind at all.
As Leilani left the dining room, her brows drew together in a frown.
‘Seriously, what else do Atlas and I have to do before that father and son will finally stop worrying about us? she thought
Still, Leilani was genuinely curious about what had happened at Imperial Academy.
So once she got back to her quarters, she called Atlas.
At Atlas’s residence, he was feeling awful. His rut was about to hit again. Before, it was always hard, but he could grit his teeth and get through it.
But now, all he could think about was running straight to Layla.
‘God, he missed that hint of rose in her scent, Atlas thought.
Atlas was still lucid, fighting a losing battle against his own body. He’d already taken a cold shower, but his body was still breaking out in cold sweat, completely out of his control.
If it had been anyone else, he would’ve ignored it.
But it was his mom, Leilani, so he forced himself to answer, even though he felt awful.
“Mom, what’s up?” Atlas asked, his voice strained.
“I heard you went to Imperial Academy to stand up for Layla?” she asked him.
Atlas was on the verge of losing control to his rut, and just hearing Layla’s name made his animal ears twitch involuntarily.
Leilani, always perceptive, immediately noticed something was off. “Atlas, what’s wrong?”
“My rut’s about to hit, and the rut blockers aren’t working for me anymore,” Atlas muttered, his voice hoarse.
“Alright, I won’t bother you anymore. Just go find Layla already.” Leilani said.
Before Atlas could even process it, his mom had already hung up. He could only sigh in defeat. If I run to Layla every time I feel like crap, wouldn’t that just prove I can’t live without her?’ he thought.
Atlas hated how much his rut and those damn pheromones had him wrapped around their finger.
He staggered to his feet, planning to take another cold shower, when the doorbell suddenly rang.
The door cam lit up, showing Angelina at his front gate, looking like she had something urgent to say.
