Chapter 63

Imperial Academy was unusually lively today. The dean’s office was packed with people.

And not just any people, these were all heavy hitters, including Alpha Prime’s Crown Prince, Atlas, the principal of Imperial Academy, and a bunch of teachers.

Meanwhile, Layla and the other students, the supposed stars of the show, got shoved into a corner.

Annie nervously swallowed and edged closer to Layla, whispering, “Layla, what is going on today? Why are both Atlas and Krish here?”

“What?” Layla blinked, distracted.

Layla hadn’t registered a word Annie said; her attention was completely fixed on Atlas, unable to tear her gaze away.

The instant Krish walked in, Atlas’s whole demeanor changed.

With her shifter senses, Layla could feel the intense hostility Atlas had for Krish, his elder brother.

But on the outside, Atlas seemed perfectly calm and indifferent, like nothing in the room could bother him.

“Krish, you showed up too?” Atlas said, sounding nonchalant.

“Yeah, I heard Layla was getting picked on, and since Duke Karter was coming, I figured I’d come see for myself,” Krish replied.

‘He’s really this invested in Layla?’ Atlas thought, his eyes narrowing.

Atlas’s gaze turned icy in an instant.

The hostility in the room was thickening by the second.

Krish raised an eyebrow. ‘So I was right, Atlas is here to compete with me for Layla,’ he thought.

Just then, Karter cleared his throat and glanced around. “Mr. Taylor, didn’t you say you’d called in representatives from the other families? Where are they?”

Davis looked conflicted, wishing both princes would just leave already. He quickly said, “His Highness Atlas has already taken care of everything, Duke Karter. You don’t need to worry.”

Krish smirked, “Looks like you move fast, Atlas.”

Atlas narrowed his eyes and let out a cold laugh. “You’re not exactly slow yourself, Krish. It’s not even your business, but you still showed up in a flash.”

Karter could sense the not-so-subtle rivalry between the two princes, both out in the open and simmering beneath the surface.

He was firmly in Krish’s camp, so right now, he had to make it clear he was backing Krish all the way.

Finally, Karter fixed his gaze on Layla, the troublemaker at the center of all this drama.

He’d always been strict with her, so he snapped, “Layla, look at what you’ve done. You stirred up such a scene that now both His Highness Krish and Atlas are here because of you.

“I remember you used to be so steady. What happened? Why are you suddenly so reckless and irresponsible? Apologize to both princes, now.”

Chapter 63

Layla’s gaze dropped.

Back when she was still living with the Sullivan family, Karter always used discipline as a reason to be harsh with her

She remembered when she was little, Nolan skipped school just to celebrate her birthday. When Karter found out, he chewed both of them out.

Karter told Nolan he wasn’t working hard enough and didn’t take his studies seriously.

And for Layla, Karter said, “Layla, you can’t get in the way of Nolan’s future. He’s not like you. He’s going to be an outstanding commander one day. We took you in, so don’t pay us back by making trouble for our family”

Layla just nodded obediently, and after that, she started to drift away from Nolan.

The Sullivan family never let Layla forget that they were the ones who adopted her, that they gave an orphan like her a good education and a comfortable life.

Layla was always aware of that, so she’d always been grateful to the Sullivan family.

But she never really felt any deep family bond with them.

Now, it was obvious Karter was firmly on Krish’s side, and his sudden friendliness toward Layla was just a ploy to win her over for Krish.

Layla still couldn’t stand Atlas, but honestly, she despised Krish even more.

Until now, Krish hadn’t said a single word to her the whole time.

But online, Krish was always praised for being gentle, kind, and refined, and was widely adored by the public.

Layla absolutely loathed this phony Crown Prince.

Seeing Layla stay quiet, Karter grew impatient. “Layla, are you ignoring me now? Didn’t you hear what I just said?”

“Duke Karter, what’s with all the yelling at Layla? Or did you forget, the Sullivan family already threw her out, didn’t they?” Atlas remarked casually, then glanced over at Layla.

Atlas said firmly, “You did nothing wrong today.”

Layla, who’d been all twisted up inside, finally felt herself relax.

She looked at Atlas.

Atlas’s eyes, cold and distant, met hers in a casual way.

The next moment, Layla ignored Karter, who was furious, and Krish, who was two-faced, walking straight over to Atlas.

She lowered her gaze. “Thanks for today, Your Highness.”

“So, how are you planning to pay me back?” Atlas asked with a smirk.

Layla was completely blindsided. She never thought Atlas would say something like that with so many people watching,

She just stood there, totally stunned.

Atlas had never seen her so spaced out before, and he found it oddly amusing.

For a split second, a rare hint of warmth flickered across his usually cold face.

Krish watched everything unfold, genuinely taken aback. ‘Layla’s talented, sure, but is she really worth Atlas making a move like this?’ he wondered.

After all, no matter how remarkable Layla was, she was still just a nobody, an orphan with no real standing.

Even Krish had only ever thought about letting one of his own followers approach her, maybe take her as a wife someday.

To Krish, Layla didn’t even qualify to be his wife.

Layla’s checks turned bright red as she bit her lip. Finally, she said, “I haven’t really thought about how to pay you back yet, Your Highness.

“We’ve spent way too much time here. I need to get back to class. Your Highness, can my friends and I go now?”

Atlas clearly wasn’t expecting a real answer. He just replied in his usual cool tone, “Go on.”

Layla let out a small sigh of relief, then, without looking back, she left the room with Annie and Alex.

As soon as they stepped out of the room, all three of them let out a collective sigh of relief.

“That was insane. Seriously, I was freaking out. Hey, Layla, was Duke Karter always that harsh to you when you lived with them?” Annie blurted out.

Annie looked at Layla, worry written all over her face.

Back then, all the rich kids thought Layla was super lucky; she got adopted and became the duke’s precious daughter overnight, even though she started out as an orphan.

But now, Annie and the others suddenly realized that Layla’s years with the Sullivan family might not have been as comfortable as they’d always imagined.

Layla stayed perfectly composed, her tone steady. “It’s all behind me now. I’ll always be grateful for what the Sullivan family did for me back then, but that’s it, nothing more.”

Just those last words said it all. There had to be some hidden struggles in her past that outsiders could never imagine.

Annie was about to press for more, but Alex grabbed her arm and cut in, turning to Layla. “Layla, seriously, thanks for everything today. I owe you big. You must be wiped out. Go get some rest in your dorm.”
