Chapter 74
Chapter 74
Layla’s eyes suddenly widened.
‘So, none of them realized who November really was. That means no one even tried to take off his mask, Layla thought to herself.
Seeing Layla frown, Karter softened his tone and said gently, “But this isn’t the end of the world. He doesn’t have to go to jail. If you’re willing to divorce him and marry Caleb, then I’ll forgive his rash actions.”
‘Divorce?’ Layla thought. She’d always wanted to divorce Atlas, but not like this.
Besides, being married to Atlas was already a headache. If she went through with the divorce, she’d just get dragged into more drama with the Sullivan and James families.
‘No way. I can’t stand trouble, and I really don’t want to get mixed up with the Sullivan or James families, Layla thought.
Just as she was about to turn Karter down, his optical computer suddenly rang. Someone was calling him.
“What? November just took off and went to Hector’s estate?” Karter blurted out, his voice full of shock.
He was completely stunned. He never expected November to just bolt like that, and then head straight for the James estate.
Layla’s heart skipped a beat.
‘Did November really beat up Duke Karter and then go to Duke Hector’s place to throw hands with him, too?’ Layla thought, her mind spinning. ‘If this really gets out of hand, there’s no way anyone can fix it!’
She
spun around and bolted out of the room. By the time Karter hung up, Layla was nowhere to be seen.
Layla ran down the long hospital hallway and bumped right into Harper and Nolan, who were talking.
Harper was grumbling to Nolan, sounding super annoyed. “Why are you still defending that girl? You have no idea how crushed Xanthe is right now.
“She’s been dead set on marrying Caleb, and everything for the wedding was already set up. She’s been working herself to the bone just to get into Imperial Academy, and now she’s all skinny and exhausted.
“It honestly breaks my heart.”
Nolan just couldn’t believe it.
‘Seriously? She’s upset now, but wasn’t Caleb her own choice from the start?’ he thought. ‘Back when Xanthe snatched Caleb from Layla, did Mom ever care how Layla felt?’
Nolan sighed, exasperated, “I told you from the beginning, Caleb’s not a good guy. Xanthe shouldn’t marry him, and Layla definitely shouldn’t, either.”
“Hmph, don’t even mention Layla. That girl’s nothing but a snake Harper snapped.
As soon as Harper finished speaking, Layla strode past her, her military boots clicking sharply on the floor.
Harper looked a bit rattled.
But Nolan’s face lit up. “Layla, you’re here. Did you go see Dad?”
“I’ve got something urgent. We’ll talk later,” Layla replied, not even sparing Harper a glance.

She just nodded at Nolan and hurried off.
Nolan frowned, noticing that Layla looked pretty upset.
‘Something’s definitely off with her,’ he thought. ‘Maybe she argued with Dad again?’
“Nolan, aren’t you being way too nice to Layla? Don’t you get it? Xanthe’s your actual sister. She’s really upset right now. Shouldn’t you be looking out for her more?” Harper complained.
Nolan’s frustration was written all over his face. You could practically see it.
He said, “Mom, can you not be so harsh on Layla? Back at home, you were always so nice to her. What changed?”
“How is this my fault? That girl just walked away without a second thought, and now she’s the reason Xanthe’s so heartbroken.
“Ugh, my poor Xanthe, her life’s been nothing but misery. She even went missing when she was a kid,” Harper kept ranting.
Nolan couldn’t listen to any more of it. He just walked off toward his dad’s room.
‘Mom is seriously getting unbearable,’ Nolan thought, completely fed up.
Layla hurried away from the Sullivan family, feeling like she could barely breathe around them anymore.
Sure, marrying Atlas was a headache, but at least it was less of a nightmare than dealing with her own family.
Right now, Layla just hoped November wouldn’t get himself into any trouble.
After leaving the hospital, she called Roger. He was on leave, out on a shopping trip with his girlfriend.
“Layla, hey, what’s up?” Roger answered.
“You know Atlas is in the middle of his rut, right? Something’s happened. He just got into a fight with Duke Karter, got caught by his guards, but managed to escape.
“Now he’s headed straight for Duke Hector’s place. It looks like he’s about to start another fight,” Layla said urgently.
Roger was stunned.
He said urgently, “I’m on my way to Duke Hector’s estate right now.”
“You’ve got an aero-vehicle, right? Can you pick me up? I’m at the hospital entrance,” Layla said.
“Got it,” Roger replied.
Five minutes later, Roger pulled up in his aero-vehicle at the hospital entrance, picked up Layla, and they headed straight for the James estate.
Roger’s girlfriend, Reyna, was there, too. She had a gentle look about her.
Layla greeted her, and Reyna smiled softly, “I’ve heard all about you, you’re seriously impressive. Should I call you Mrs. Zimmer, or is that too much?”
Reyna was in on the situation, but since Layla and Atlas hadn’t made anything official, she honestly wasn’t sure what to call
her.
Layla replied coolly, “Just call me Layla.”
“Hi, Layla, nice to meet you. I’m Reyna Mills. I work at the hospital, so if you ever need help, just reach out. Want to swap

contact info?” Reyna said.
“Sure,” Layla replied.
Reyna was really thoughtful and caring. Her way of speaking put people at ease, and she was really easy to get along with
When the aero-vehicle pulled up to Hector’s estate, Roger hung up and said, “Layla, better stay out of sight for now. Let me handle getting His Highness out.”
“Okay,” Layla replied.
Layla knew Roger could pull it off; he’d get Atlas out without anyone realizing who he really was.
If she got involved, it’d be way too hard to explain.
Layla stayed in the aero-vehicle with Reyna, and her optical computer suddenly rang. It was Nolan calling.
Layla knew exactly what Nolan was thinking. He just wanted things to go back to the way they used to be. But she couldn’t help but wonder, ‘How could he forget? We were never really a family to begin with.’
“Nolan, what’s up?” Layla answered.
“Layla, where are you? Are you coming back to the hospital at all?” Nolan asked.
“I’m not coming back. Mrs. Sullivan clearly doesn’t want me around anyway,” Layla replied.
“Layla,” Nolan hesitated, his voice trailing off.
“Nolan, I’ve already been disappointed by everyone else in the Sullivan family. You’re the only one I still believe in. Please, don’t let me down,” Layla said, her tone firm.
Nolan fell silent. These past few months had been pure torture for him. When he got back from his long mission, he thought he could finally spend some real time with his family.
But he never imagined everything would get turned upside down like this.
Honestly, all the drama today was just Xanthe and her usual antics.
Layla said, “Nolan, you really need to keep your guard up around Xanthe. Just a few hours ago, she showed up at my dorm, bawling about how Caleb won’t marry her and wanted me to talk to him for her.
“Then, I don’t know what she said to November, but next thing you know, he went off and started a fight. She’s trying to make me cut ties with the Sullivan family for good, so I’ll never be able to go back.
“She’s so hung up on Caleb, she’d sacrifice anything for him, even if it means throwing me under the bus. Let Duke Karter and Mrs. Sullivan believe whatever they want about her, and I honestly don’t care.
“But Nolan, just promise me you won’t let her mess up your life, too.”
