Chapter 73
Chapter 73
‘November actually went and punched Karter?’ Layla thought, totally caught off guard.
She knew Atlas could get reckless during his rut, but this was beyond her imagination
She asked tentatively, “Could there be some mix-up? And where is he?”
Nolan was caught off guard. Layla’s first question was about November, not Karter.
He felt a little off. “Layla, aren’t you even going to ask how Dad is?”
Layla stayed silent.
Nolan let out a quiet sigh, unable to bring himself to scold her. ‘Guess what happened before really did hurt Layla,’ he wondered.
He asked, “Layla, is that guy really your husband?”
“I wasn’t there, so I can’t say for sure what really happened,” Layla replied.
‘What if November wasn’t the one who punched Duke Karter after all?’ Layla thought.
Even though she said otherwise, Layla’s gaze kept drifting to the half-eaten food on the table.
November had brought back dinner for both of them. She’d already eaten her share, but his was still sitting there, untouched.
First, he went after Caleb. Maybe Karter really was next on his list.
‘Honestly, this kind of thing is exactly what November would do,’ Layla thought to herself.
Nolan let out another sigh. “Anyway, Layla, you should come see Dad. He really does care about you, you know.”
Layla wanted to say, ‘If it weren’t for my grades, Karter wouldn’t even pay attention to me, the daughter he threw out of the house.’
Not long ago, she’d aced the placement exam and snagged the top spot in the S mech suit class.
Students in the S classes for every subject were basically destined to become key players in the military or government.
And Layla was even more special. Even though she was in the Mech Engineering Division, her combat skills were off the charts. She’d never lose a one-on-one against any ordinary trooper.
She made a name for herself by going up against five at once and coming out on top.
A kid with dual mastery in combat and mech suits like her was hardly ever seen.
Karter was already regretting it. ‘Why did I ever let Harper and Xanthe drive Layla out?’ he thought.
Layla was stubborn as hell. Once things were shattered, there was no putting them back together.
With Nolan saying all that, Layla was getting anxious about November. If he didn’t reveal his true identity, there’s no way he’d get away with hitting the duke.
She finally nodded. “Alright, I’ll head to the hospital now.”
Nolan let out a sigh of relief, gave her the room number, and hung up.

Chapter 73
Word was, the rebels had been wiped out, so the school, which had been locked down for days, was finally open again. All you had to do was scan your optical computer to get in.
No wonder Xanthe could just walk right in.
Layla hopped on a public aero-vehicle to the hospital, kept trying to text November the whole way, but he never replied.
After a moment’s thought, she asked Zaa to contact Zee.
Zaa reported, “Mr. Zimmer, Zee’s device is powered off.”
Layla felt a chill run down her spine. If even Zee was unreachable, then November must really be in deep trouble.
But that didn’t make sense. Once Karter unmasked November, he should’ve known exactly who he was and wouldn’t have dared to lay a finger on him.
Besides, Karter and his guards couldn’t even take on November.
Layla’s thoughts were all over the place. She suddenly realized she was getting more and more attached to November, and that was seriously not good news.
With her thoughts all tangled up, Layla made her way to the hospital. Outside the hospital room, Karter’s guards spotted her and didn’t hesitate to let her through.
As soon as Layla walked in, she heard Harper crying and complaining, “Seriously, what is going on with us?
“First, the James family calls off the engagement, and now some crazy guy just shows up and goes after you. Ugh, why is everything falling apart for our family? Are we cursed or something?”
Karter, clearly fed up with her crying, snapped, “Shut up. Can’t you just let me rest?
Harper instantly stopped, quietly dabbing at her tears.
Karter was just about to say that Caleb marrying Layla would be a win for everyone.
If they could bring Layla back into the Sullivan family fold, it’d keep the families connected and maybe even score some points with Krish.
After what went down at the school last time, Karter could tell Krish wasn’t pleased with him.
Just then, he looked up and saw Layla walk in.
Karter moved, and pain shot through his injury. He’d nearly forgotten about it after the treatment, but now the ache brought it all back.
Layla saw that Karter’s face was swollen, and he was wrapped up in medical gear. He must’ve at least broken a bone.
Back in his prime, Karter was a formidable commander. Even now, shifters, especially the elite ones, were known for their resilience.
November really didn’t pull any punches when he went after Karter.
Layla thought for sure Karter would confront her the moment she walked in, but instead, he just glanced her way and said, “Layla, you’re here.”
Harper turned and shot Layla a death glare.
She spat, “You’ve got some nerve coming here. First, you mess up Xanthe’s marriage, then your husband goes and attacks the duke? What were we thinking, bringing you into this family?”

Chapter 73
“Shut up. Karter stapped.
This damn woman is going to drive me insane, Karter thought, fuming Here I am trying to get Layla track into the family. and she just keeps running her mouth and screwing everything up
Harper was left speechless by Karter’s shout, but she only felt more wronged, tears rolling down her cheeks
Karter, worried she’d blurt out something even more stupid, and honestly, her crying was getting on his nerves, said coldly. “Get out.”
Harper bit her lip, got to her feet, and walked out.
But as she passed Layla, she shot her a venomous glare.
Layla had been hurt enough already. She was just done with Harper. Harper was not her mother anymore.
Nobody else knew, but before Xanthe came back, Harper basically used Layla as a substitute for her real daughter. Pack then, Harper was all warmth and kindness to Layla,
But once Xanthe returned, Harper became ice-cold and heartless toward Layla,
“Mrs. Sullivan, let me make one thing clear. The reason Xanthe and Caleb aren’t getting married is all on the James family.
“If you’ve got the nerve, go ask them yourself. Don’t come here blaming me. I’ve got nothing to do with it. And for the record, you picked the wrong person to mess with,” Layla shot back.
“Layla, after all these years raising you, is this how you treat me?” Harper snapped.
“That’s enough. Get out.” Karter was really losing it. His anger was so intense that his stitches actually came undone.
Harper had always been scared of her husband. Hearing that, she quickly turned and left without another word.
Suddenly, the hospital room went dead quiet. The only thing you could hear was the soft ticking of the machines.
Layla didn’t even look at Harper as she left. She turned straight to the duke and said, “Duke Karter, Nolan told me the guy who hurt you was my husband. I just want to know, was it really him? And where is he now?”
“I had him locked up. Attacking a public official right out in the open? He’s going to get hauled off to the Interstellar Courthouse for this,” Karter replied coldly.
