Sorry I'm Mated To The Commander novel Chapter 76

Chapter 76

Chapter 76

Hearing this, Layla thought of Leilani, who she’d seen at the palace.

That woman was gentle, beautiful, and smart, not to mention a powerful shifter. But even she was trapped in a political marriage.

No wonder Layla had always seen a hint of loneliness in her eyes.

Given Atlas’s fraught childhood and the endless cycle of power plays and underhanded schemes that had defined his life, it was little wonder he’d ended up so cold and unapproachable.

It made perfect sense that when his rut hit, he’d slip back into that soft, cub-like mindset, clinging tightly to Layla like she was his one and only safe space.

Layla let out a soft sigh and looked up, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “Come on, dig in before it gets cold. I didn’t really follow a recipe and just whipped up whatever popped into my head, so no promises on the flavor.”

“Anything you make is guaranteed to be amazing!” November said, his voice soft and earnest, like he was afraid to sound too eager. “Hey Layla, could I pack some up to send to Mom later?”

Layla’s smile softened. She knew he cared about Leilani more than he let on; he just had a terrible time putting that care into words.

She shook her head gently. “We’ve already picked at this batch. I’ll whip up something fresh instead. You can have the bot deliver it to Leilani later.”

“You really don’t have to go to all that trouble, Layla,” November said, his tone warm with gratitude.

“It’s no trouble at all. I’ve already eaten, and I’m not hungry anymore. You go ahead and enjoy,” Layla replied, already turning toward the fridge.

The shelves were stuffed to the brim with ingredients. After a quick check about Leilani’s dietary preferences, she got to work, mixing up a few new dishes, plus a side of creamy mac and cheese for good measure.

November watched her bustle around the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, and bit his lip to hold back the smile threatening to split his face.

He turned to the butler bot at his side, his voice quiet but full of wonder. “Zee, tell me I didn’t just score the best wife in the entire universe.”

“Of course! You two have a 100% gene match, after all,” Zee replied.

“My parents had a 100% match too, so how come they weren’t happy?” November asked, frowning.

“That’s a tough one. My processor can’t compute it right now, but if I had to guess, maybe it’s because His Majesty has, uh, had another partner before?” Zee muttered.

When November glanced over, Zee instantly shrank back, pulling its mechanical limbs in.

Just when Zee thought November was about to get mad, November nodded seriously. “Lucky for me, I don’t have any prior romantic history. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be worthy of someone like Layla!”

Zee felt a frisson of alarm zip through its circuits. “Thank goodness I didn’t upset my master!’ Zee thought to itself, its internal processors whirring with relief.

Meanwhile, Layla whipped up some new dishes in no time. With Zee’s help, she packed them into special insulated lunch boxes.

Zee’s mechanical aim closed around the lunch boxes, and it turned to head out. All it took was a quick program input, are! the aero-vehicle would ferry the food to its destination autonomously.

Layla glanced over her shoulder and found that November had cleaned his plate, every last bite of every dish gone. Tsk, that fight must’ve really burned some calories for November, she thought.

The moment November polished off his food, Layla told him she had to head back to school. Of course, November was right there clinging to her arm immediately, adamant that she shouldn’t go alone.

Layla frowned. “You just beat people up. Even if Roger’s handling the aftermath, it’s better if you stay out of sight for now?

“If I don’t show up, they’ll just come after you. But if I’m there, at least they’re afraid of getting punched and won’t dare talk trash. Layla, please, let me come with you. My rut is almost over,” November pleaded.

He knew full well that once his rut faded, Layla would pull away, putting distance between them. Every extra minute he could steal with her was a treasure beyond measure.

A master at playing the sweet, clingy fox, his fluffy ears twitched incessantly, a silent, desperate plea for her attention.

His tail, even softer and fluffier, crept over and coiled around Layla’s ankle, brushing against her in playful little sweeps.

And this sly fox also flooded the air with his pheromones at the same time, just to make sure Layla couldn’t resist.

With all these moves at once, Layla was totally defenseless. “Alright, but no more punching people in a fit of impulse.” Layla said.

“I promise, Layla! I’ll listen to you!” November exclaimed, his voice soft and full of adoration.

Meanwhile, as Layla and November headed back to school, Hector, who was just as bruised and battered, was on the phone with Karter, who was still laid up in bed.

“Roger actually showed up? Do you think Prince Atlas is trying to win over Layla and November, so he had Roger step in for them?” Hector asked.

It was the only logic that checked out. Roger had descended out of nowhere, taken November with him without so much as a word of explanation, and left them with zero answers to cling to.

Karter narrowed his eyes. ‘Prince Atlas must be behind this, he thought.

With Atlas likely pulling the strings behind the scenes, neither Karter nor Hector dared to confront November head-on. In the end, the two of them resolved to seek out Krish instead.

Krish listened to the entire story, then asked after the two dukes’ injuries in a soft, caring tone. The pair couldn’t help but feel a flicker of flattery at his genuine concern.

“If Atlas was behind it, that would be completely inappropriate. I’ll go report this to Father,” Krish said.

“Your Highness, we didn’t mean to speak ill of Prince Atlas. We just thought he might’ve been misled by people, Hector quickly said.

Karter frowned slightly, feeling like Hector was trying to drag Layla into this mess.

Even though he was a bit annoyed with Layla, it wasn’t like he was ready to give up on her just yet. And he could see even Krish hadn’t given up on Layla.

So he cut in, “Layla just visited me at the hospital. She had no idea what November was up to. I think this whole thing was just November acting on his own.”

Krish knew Layla was sharp, no powerful connections, no influential backing, her background as transparent as glass,

nothing like the enigmatic November. What’s more, she was a girl, far easier to keep under his thumb.

Truth be told, he’d long been hoping to marry her off to his right-hand man. Lately, though, his cousin Tomas couldn’t stop gushing about her. If Tomas was this smitten with her, then arranging a match between them might not be such a bad idea after all.

After disclosing his conversation with Karter and Hector, Krish hurried off to the palace to see his father.

Meanwhile, Leilani was just about to head off for afternoon coffee with Dakota when Mollie walked in. She leaned in and whispered, “Your Majesty, Prince Atlas is in rut, and he just beat up both Hector and Karter.”

Leilani arched her delicate brows. “How did that happen?” Mollie filled her in on everything she’d heard.

Leilani let out a soft laugh. “That boy really does look out for Layla. Sounds like he’s got some real fire and spunk in him, finally starting to act like a young man.”

Mollie looked worried as she commented, “Both dukes are on Krish’s side. Even though Roger stepped in and Prince Atlas kept out of sight, I’m still worried Krish might make a big deal out of this.”

“I wish he would. Come on, let’s go have coffee with His Majesty,” Leilani said.

Mollie was a touch confused. Ordinarily, Leilani loathed sharing a meal or a cup of coffee with Dakota. Yet today, she seemed positively cheerful.

When they met up with Dakota, he couldn’t help but feel a flicker of confusion upon noticing his wife was positively glowing today.

However, the next moment, Leilani’s glee disappeared as she lowered her eyes, looking genuinely apologetic. “Your Majesty, I’m here to apologize on Atlas’s behalf.”

“What happened with Atlas?” Dakota asked.
