Chapter 78
if you wanted a drink, you had to leave the room and summon a bot to get it for you.
With the four of them crammed in there, the room felt totally packed. Alex strolled around without a care, while Annie looked all jittery and on edge.
“Jesus, I wonder what he looks like.
“Does this guy even want to marry me?
“I’m a bit nervous.” Annie trailed off.
Layla’s mouth twitched. “Annie, did you seriously forget you’ve got a fiancé already? If you’re really thinking about getting together with this new match, what are you going to do about Branden?”
Branden was a total jerk. He only agreed to marry Annie as a last resort, and basically treated her like a rut blocker.
But still, he was her fiancé in name, and both families had already agreed to it.
Annie, though, was totally unfazed. “Doesn’t matter. I’m never marrying Branden. I’ve already dumped him, all on my own! If I like this new guy, I’ll marry him. If not, I’ll just move on and find someone better.”
Layla cast a glance at November, then turned to Annie. “Anyway, you should be prepared for anything.”
While they were chatting, the lounge door suddenly swung open, and a stellar ranger in full military uniform strode in, his boots thudding with authority on the floor.
He looked a bit taken aback upon seeing these people. Annie’s eyes also went round as saucers when she saw him.
“Wait, it’s you? Are you sure you’re in the right place?” She blurted out.
It was Randall Norris, the same guy who’d insisted on checking Annie and Layla outside Understreet, and later ran into Annie again when he dropped the mental box off at Layla’s dorm.
He pressed his lips into a tight line, a flicker of confusion clouding his features as he took in the scene unfolding in the
room.
Glancing down at his optical computer, he lifted his gaze once more. This time, his eyes locking squarely with Annie’s.
“I’m not in the wrong place,” he stated, his voice steady. “I’m here to call off our marriage.”
That really took Annie aback and ticked her off big time. She was all sweetness when people treated her right, but if anyone crossed her, she’d blow up in a heartbeat.
She hadn’t even made up her mind about this guy, and now he was dumping her before she could even decide? He was the one rejecting her first? This was totally unacceptable!
Annie stormed up to Randall, grabbed him by the collar, and demanded, “Are you saying I’m not good enough for you?”
Randall coolly shook off her hand. “I don’t think you’re the right person to be my wife.”
Annie’s lips quivered with rage. ‘So he just thinks I’m not good enough!’ she thought, fuming.
“I’m not accepting this. You’re in no place to dismiss me,” she snapped.
Randall was totally blindsided. Who would’ve thought his genetic match would be this feisty princess?
He’d never gone for high-maintenance wealthy girls; to him, they were all drama queens with far too much attitude.
Just as Randall was about to yank his hand free of Annie’s, he suddenly glanced up, and his gaze landed on November, who

sat perched on the nearby sofa, mask firmly in place. There was something about this masked man that stirred a faint. unsettling sense of familiarity in him.
He couldn’t put his finger on who it was, but he reined in his annoyance and kept his cool.
“Anyway, I’ve already decided to call off the marriage. If you don’t want to do it today, we can talk about it tomorrow,” he said.
With that, he turned and walked out. Annie was so mad that she was practically bristling with rage.
Layla just sighed inwardly. ‘Guess the Genetic Pairing Program really isn’t something one should mess with.
‘The match rate is supposed to be super high, but in the end, it seems one just gets stuck with someone they can’t stand.
She walked over to Annie, whose eyes were still red from anger, and said, “Why are you so worked up? You didn’t even mean to end up with him, did you? If he wants out, isn’t that perfect for you?”
“That’s not the same at all! He actually had the nerve to reject me, without even knowing me! How can someone be so ridiculously shallow?” Annie snapped.
“Feelings are complicated,” Layla sighed.
“Forget it! I’m not breaking it off now!” Annie shot back.
Layla couldn’t figure out how Annie’s mind worked. But now that Randall was gone, there was no reason for them to hang around here any longer. So they headed back to school.
But November leaned in close to Layla’s ear and whispered, “Star, you’re free tonight, right? Let’s go home together.”

Chapter 79
November’s mask had a chilly touch as it pressed against Layla’s skin, causing her to tremble slightly. But his breath carried a sultry warmth, rushing over her cheek.
It was ice and fire colliding. She could feel her pheromones threatening to break free. Keeping composure, she said goodbye to the other two, then boarded the public aero-vehicle with November.
The aero-vehicle was massive, with several passengers already seated. They glanced up at the couple with friendly, admiring
eyes.
Students from the Imperial Academy’s College of Military were the brightest and most promising young people on Alpha Prime.
Otherwise, the James family wouldn’t have insisted that Xanthe get into Imperial Academy before agreeing to the marriage alliance.
Layla and November were both tall, and one could tell their psychic force was no joke.
The passengers whispered among themselves, exclaiming that theirs must be some kind of amazing family to have raised such standouts.
The two of them took seats in the very last row, with November pressed right up against Layla, constantly glancing around.
“I’ve never even been on a public aero-vehicle before. Zee could’ve just driven our aero-vehicle here,” he said.
“Then get off if it’s beneath you,” Layla murmured, her tone teasing.
“No. I don’t wanna go.” His voice dropped. “I’ve never ridden something this noisy… but it does not matter at all. I just wanna be with you, Layla.”
Layla’s brow furrowed. She glanced at his eyes, which were wide, earnest, totally unguarded behind the mask. His simple confession felt like deliberate flirtation.
The public aero-vehicle wouldn’t drop them off right at Atlas’s residence. No one would ever dare set up a station anywhere near the place.
After a ten-minute ride, they hopped off and walked for another five minutes, finally reaching Atlas’s residence. And from a distance, they spotted Angelina.
Days had gone by since they’d seen her last, and Layla had almost completely forgotten she was ever around. Back when Atlas suddenly went into rut, Angelina tried to help him through it as his rut blocker, but he totally lost it and roughed her
Luckily, Layla had arrived just in time. If she hadn’t, it would’ve been way worse than just a few broken bones.
With how advanced medicine was these days, unless people were actually dying, they’d be patched up and good as new in just a few days.
Take the two dukes who November had roughed up, for example, they were already bouncing around like nothing had happened. All their physical wounds healed up, but the damage to their pride? Yeah, that’s not something one gets over anytime soon.
Krish couldn’t do a thing for them, and they couldn’t even go after November to settle the score. They just had to eat that loss and keep quiet about it.
The James family was in a bind. Both Hector and Caleb had gotten beaten up, but they couldn’t do a thing about November, not with Atlas seeming to back him up. So they ended up hating the Sullivan family.
