But when Layla met Tomas’s sincere gaze, she shook her head. “Sorry, I don’t have time. I’m going back to the orphanage for the New Year.”
“Layla, you’re really talented, and this is a great opportunity. We’ll even get to spar with outstanding students from other worlds,” Tomas said.
“Sorry, but being with family during the New Year matters more to me than anything else,” Layla replied.
“But the people at the orphanage aren’t your real family.” Tomas pointed out.
Layla’s face instantly darkened at his words.
Layla said firmly, “The director and the kids at the orphanage have always treated me well. To me, they’re my real family.
“Tomas, sometimes blood doesn’t mean everything, and it definitely can’t replace the people who truly care about you.”
Tomas hadn’t expected Layla to get so upset. He was at a loss for words, suddenly thinking about how the Sullivan family had treated her, and didn’t know what else to say.
Tomas admired Layla a lot. She was so talented, and Tomas had always thought that if Layla could join Krish’s side, her future would be truly bright.
Layla would join the Military Command and become an outstanding mech engineer, maybe even a commander. She might even marry the best of the best.
Just then, Nolan walked over, giving the two a quick look. “Layla, did you two need to talk?” he asked.
“We’re done here. Let’s head out, Nolan,” Layla said.
“Alright,” Nolan replied.
Nolan knew Tomas well, Krish’s closest cousin. Nolan nodded to Tomas, then headed out with Layla toward the aero-vehicle waiting outside.
“Layla, do you know Tomas well?” Nolan asked.
“Not really. We just sparred once during boot camp,” Layla replied.
“So, what did he want with you?” Nolan continued.
Layla stopped walking. “He was talking about the winter training camp. I think he wants me to side with Prince Krish.”
Nolan let out a sigh of relief. “I thought he might have a thing for you,”
“Of course not. Besides, I’m already married,” Layla replied.
At the mention of marriage, Nolan paused, frowning. “Are you still married to that guy?
“Layla, even though Dad and Duke Hector aren’t blaming you for what happened this time, you’d better think it through. He’s way too reckless. One day, he’s bound to get you into trouble.”
Layla had always wanted to divorce Atlas, but it had nothing to do with his roughing up Hector and Karter last time.
On the contrary, Layla actually thought Atlas did a good job beating them up.
But Nolan was always the most filial one, so Layla didn’t push the topic any further. Layla looked at him and said, “Nolan,

you didn’t just ask me here to talk about that, did you?”
“Nothing serious, really. I just wanted to catch up. Feels like everyone’s changed lately,” Nolan admitted.
Layla could totally relate to that.
Nolan had always been the golden boy, the one Karter pinned all his hopes on.

In Nolan’s eyes, his father, Karter, was strict and imposing, his mother, Harper, was gentle and loving, and his adopted sister. Layla, was smart and sensible.
But then his real sister, Xanthe, came back, and the adopted sister, Layla, was sent away.
After that, the engagement between the James family and the Sullivan family kept getting switched up again and again.
In the end, Karter and Harper were always fighting, and Harper would end up sitting alone in the living room, quietly crying.
Nolan was just so done with it all, frustrated and tired to the bone.
The two of them went to a high-end, comfortable coffee house in the city center, ordered a pot of coffee, and picked out a few pastries.
“Layla, do you remember this coffee house?” Nolan asked.
When Layla first joined the Sullivan family, she was super cautious and barely spoke.
Nolan, a few years older than her, used to bring her here for coffee and pastries.
Layla nodded. “Yeah, I remember. You were worried I wouldn’t fit in with the Sullivan family, so when you found out I liked desserts, you brought me here.”
“When you first joined our family, Dad and Mom were both so happy, especially Mom,” Nolan said. “But now that Xanthe’s back, I don’t know why, but they just don’t seem happy anymore.”
Layla glanced down, quietly pouring coffee into both their cups.
She said, “I’ve got no clue if Duke Karter is happy or not, but your mom should be happy, right?”
“She was happy at first, but then something changed. Now she cries at the drop of a hat, complains about bad luck, blames the James family, blames Dad, blames-” Nolan’s voice faded.
“And blames me, too, doesn’t she?” Layla added softly.
“Layla, that’s-” Nolan said softly.
Layla smiled lightly, brushing off the topic, “Nolan, is your break on Alpha Prime almost up?”
“Yeah, I thought about moving back, but with everything going on at home, I just don’t want to anymore,” Nolan said, pausing before he looked up and added, “Xanthe’s pregnant.”
Layla didn’t even bat an eye.
After all, Xanthe had gone through several ruts together with Caleb.
Xanthe was pregnant, but Caleb still wouldn’t marry her. No wonder Harper was always so worried and in tears.
Layla didn’t want to talk about Xanthe, and Nolan got it. Honestly, he wasn’t keen on bringing up Xanthe, either.

Chapter 83
They were sitting in a half-open booth with a clear soundproof wall, so no one outside could hear their conversation. But they could still see inside.
Suddenly, a crowd passed by, escorting a striking man in military uniform. Layla glanced up, locking eyes with Atlas.
Atlas immediately averted his gaze.
Layla rolled her eyes inwardly.
Nolan spotted Atlas and his group, too. “Word is, His Highness is heading out to battle again. The guy never takes a break.
“He’s like a total war maniac. You can tell he doesn’t care about power, but Prince Krish is always on guard around him.”
Layla took a bite of her pastry. “Nolan, are you working for Prince Krish, too?”

“I don’t really have a choice. Dad sided with Prince Krish. Honestly, Layla, Prince Krish is the heir apparent. He’ll probably inherit the throne.
“If you want a better future in the Military Command, you should at least respond to his gestures,” Nolan said.
“Nah, I’m not that ambitious. If I can’t get into the Military Command after graduation, I’ll just open a mech repair shop.” Layla replied.
“That’d be a real waste of your talent.” Nolan let out a soft sigh.
While the siblings were catching up, Atlas led his team into a luxury private room, where Krish and his guards were already seated.
Krish spoke warmly, “Atlas, why are you heading out to fight again right at the end of the year? Every time you leave, you’re gone for weeks, sometimes months, so you always end up missing New Year’s Eve dinner with us.”
“Dad and Mom will have you with them, and that’s enough. Anything else?” Atlas said.
“We’re about to be apart for a long time again. Come on, let’s at least share a cup of coffee before you go,” Krish suggested.
“Sure,” Atlas said.
Atlas knew Krish wouldn’t just invite him for coffee without a reason. Krish was definitely probing for something.
Plus, leaving his mother behind made him uneasy, so Atlas figured he’d better give Krish a warning before heading out.
Still, Atlas couldn’t shake off a nagging feeling. Layla was alone with Nolan. He couldn’t help but wonder what they were up
