Ten minutes later, the civilian starship took a hit to its engine, and the back half broke off, vanishing into the endless void of

space.

At the very last moment, Layla grabbed the controls and brought the ship down in a rough landing on the planet.

“Everyone, strap in!” Layla commanded loudly.

Annie was the first to react. She dashed over to the safety harnesses on the wall and strapped herself in.

Evan and a few others quickly followed suit.

The passengers who’d been trying to storm the control room earlier were now frozen in fear. It wasn’t until Layla’s second warning that they finally snapped out of it and rushed to secure themselves.

If they hadn’t gone to hassle Layla and just stayed put in the safety bay like they were supposed to, they wouldn’t be in such a mess right now.

The crash landing hit like a freight train. Passengers who hadn’t managed to buckle up were sent flying through the air, slamming hard into the walls.

Layla checked the time.

It was already half past nine.

The force of the crash landing made Layla suddenly spit out blood.

She glanced up at the cockpit window, now webbed with cracks, swiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, then rose from the pilot’s seat, steady as ever, and walked out.

“Annie, Evan, are you both alright?” she called out.

“I’m fine, Layla,” Annie replied.

“I’m okay, too, Layla,” Evan said, pausing for a second before asking, “Prince Atlas didn’t come, did he?”

The guy, who studied in the Mech Engineering Division, was freaking out. “So… what are we gonna do now?”

The other passengers, injured or not, wanted to yell at Layla, but the pain and sheer hopelessness had crushed any fight left in them.

Layla’s eyes were downcast as she pulled out the mech suit remote.

“We fight,” Layla declared.

“Yeah, let’s fight! Maybe there is still a chance for us,” one of the passengers called out.

There had been over 100 people on board in total, but after the rebels’ attack and the crash, only about 80 were still alive. And aside from Layla, Annie, and Evan, fewer than 20 actually stepped up, ready to fight,

Of those 20, just two were retired stellar rangers. The rest were either still students like Layla and her crew or rich kids who’d bought themselves mech suits for fun.

Honestly, their combat skills were so weak that they were basically useless.

The rest were either genuinely terrified, too old to fight, or just too frail-mostly women, little kids, and the elderly.

And then, some just cowered in the back, not daring to make a move,

“What if they just rush out and leave us behind?” someone muttered nervously.

Annie snapped at the words, “Why should we care whether you live or die? We already saved your asses once. Are we supposed to babysit you forever?

“If you won’t pick up a weapon and fight with us, then just sit tight and wait for the rebels to come finish you off.

Layla spaced out for a moment, just staring at those people, as if something crossed her mind for a split second.

But now wasn’t the time to get distracted.

“Forget it, Annie. Don’t waste your breath on them. The rebels will be here any second,” Layla said.

The rebels were swarming all over the place. This planet had basically turned into their stronghold.

Layla could try to carve a path out with Annie and the others, but whether they’d survive or how many would make it, there was no telling.

Layla herself might not make it out alive.

Layla glanced up at the rebel army drawing closer, and the very first thing that crossed her mind was, ‘So if I die here, does my marriage contract with Atlas just get automatically canceled?’

Just when everyone was feeling totally doomed, a huge fireball suddenly burst across the sky, and a fleet of bomber aero- vehicles came roaring in, raining destruction down on the rebel forces.

At the same time, some rebels in mech suits charged straight at Layla and the others, and chaos erupted as both sides started fighting.

But Layla and the others didn’t feel hopeless anymore, as more and more Alpha Prime stellar rangers were showing up in the sky, fighting like total pros and tearing into the rebels.

“Prince Atlas has arrived. Our Alpha Prime’s top commander has really come,” one of the passengers shouted.

All the survivors on the ship finally breathed a real sigh of relief. They were so happy they couldn’t hold back their tears, clinging to each other and sobbing with joy.

The rebels who tried to get close to Layla and the others were instantly blasted away.

But there were still plenty of rebel forces left scattered across the planet.

The battle raged for a full five hours. When the chaos finally died down, there wasn’t a single rebel left anywhere near Layla and her group.

All the passengers huddled in place, wrapped in blankets, waiting for their top commander to show up.

Annie was wrapped in a blanket, sticking close to Layla. Suddenly, she caught sight of something in the distance and sprang to her feet. “Wow! Prince Atlas is here!”

Everyone was instantly swept up in excitement, hope surging through the crowd.

With flames lighting up the sky and the vast universe stretching out behind him, the tall, impossibly handsome man strode forward in his black combat suit, every step radiating authority.

All the survivors dropped to their knees in awe, but Layla was the only one left standing, her eyes locked on him, completely

stunned.

There was a flash of urgency in Atlas’s eyes. Earlier, he hadn’t gotten a single message from Layla since her comms went dead.

He knew just how brutal the rebels could be. Every second he was rushing over, he dreaded the thought of finding her lifeless, shattered body.

But if the civilian ship had been blasted apart out in the void, he might not even have a body to mourn over.

Zee kept chattering away, trying to comfort him. “Don’t worry, Atlas. Your marriage contract is still in effect. If anything happens to Layla, you’ll officially be a widower.”

Atlas’s mouth twitched, but he couldn’t deny that Zee had a point.

Even though the marriage status on the optical computer never switched to widowed, it wasn’t until Atlas saw Layla standing there without a single scratch that his heart finally settled for real.

Atlas barely glanced at Layla, his eyes cool and detached, then addressed the crowd. “Stay put. Someone will come to take you all back to Alpha Prime.”

Layla could sense how distant he was, her gaze darkening for a second. Still, she kept her voice steady as she spoke up. “Prince Atlas, I need to get to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core. Can you have your people take us there?”

Atlas gave her a cool, reserved nod in response. “Sure.”

With that, he turned and walked away, his whole demeanor icy and distant. Some of the survivors couldn’t help but whisper among themselves. “Huh, I thought she and Prince Atlas were super close, but he barely even pays her any attention.”

“Guess girls just get carried away with their wild dreams sometimes,” another scoffed.

Layla was stung by Atlas’s coldness, but she raised her head, her gaze cold and cutting as she stared down those gossipers.

The guy, all bluster and no bite, snapped, “What are you looking at?”

“I’m gonna remember people like you. Next time something like this happens, you’ll be the first one I throw off the ship,” Layla shot back.

“You!” The guy was rendered wordless.

Annie chimed in, her fury barely contained, “Well said, Layla. Some people are just insufferable. We risked our necks to save you, and you still won’t quit whining.

“If Layla hadn’t been here, you’d all be space dust by now!” She thought, ‘Should’ve kicked these dumbasses a few more times when I had the chance.

Layla didn’t have the patience to deal with their nonsense anymore. She turned to Annie and said, “Let’s not waste another second on these people. I need to hurry over to the orphanage, Celia and the others must be freaking out by now.”

“Yeah. Let’s go,” Annie agreed.

Soon, some stellar rangers came to pick up Layla and Annie, got them aboard a ship, and set them up in a private, super comfortable suite just for them each.

The moment Layla stepped into her room and opened the door, someone hugged her tight.

“Layla, I was so worried about you…” the voice murmured, trembling with relief.

A big, fluffy tail instinctively wrapped around Layla’s waist, holding her close.
