Just then, Evan came rushing back. “Layla, you called it. We caught the first officer-he actually murdered the captain, tampered with the ship’s systems, and opened the airlock.
“He’s in custody now.”
Layla nodded. “Alright. Are the other passengers staying calm?”
“Most of them have settled down, but the attacks outside are really freaking them out,” Evan replied.
The students of The College of Military were still pretty composed, but most of the others were just ordinary civilians.
After witnessing that brutal, indiscriminate massacre at the start, everyone was scared out of their wits.
Evan asked nervously, “Layla, did you get the flight controls back online?”\
“All set,” Layla replied, entering the final command. Instantly, the control room screens lit up, and everyone’s eyes lit up with relief.
They were finally about to get out of danger.
Evan was practically bouncing with excitement. “That’s great! We shall leave here right now, shall we?”
Layla shook her head. “We can’t yet.”
“Why not?” Evan asked, looking confused.
He wasn’t the only one-everyone else looked just as lost.
Someone burst out, “The ship’s fixed. Why aren’t we getting out of here? What’s that supposed to mean?
“Don’t tell me you’re in cahoots with those rebels outside!”
Annie also didn’t really get why they weren’t leaving right away, but she was quick to back Layla up.
She shot back at the guy who questioned, “Are you out of your mind? If we were really working with those rebels, why would we bother closing the airlock and fixing the ship’s controls?”
The guy grumbled, “But the controls are fixed now. Why aren’t we leaving?”
Layla stayed calm. She tapped the screen, and the view of the ship’s surroundings popped up. She pointed at the rebels’ ships.
She said, “If we take off now, they’ll just chase us down and blow us to pieces in mid-air. Our bodies would be floating through space forever.”
Someone blurted out, “So what are we supposed to do now?”
Layla replied patiently, “I’ve already contacted Prince Atlas. I’ll pilot the ship in circles around here. As long as we hold out until his troops arrive, we’ll be fine.”
The room went dead silent-even Annie stared at Layla in shock.
Everyone knew what kind of person Prince Atlas was. ‘Could Layla really get him to come help?’ The doubt was written all over their faces.
Evan suddenly remembered. ‘Wait. Didn’t people at school say Layla and her husband, November, had joined up with

Prince Atlas? If she really can reach him, maybe Prince Atlas really will show up.
But there was still one more question.
“How did you even get in touch with Prince Atlas?” someone asked.

Everyone’s optical computers were down-there was no way to contact the outside world. So how on earth did Layla manage to reach Prince Atlas?
Layla replied coolly, “That’s not something you need to know. Right now, all you can do is trust me-and trust Prince Atlas.
“Unless someone here has a better plan or actually knows how to pilot this ship.”
Everyone turned to the mech engineer from earlier. He stammered, “I’m only a freshman. I’ve just started learning basic mech design. How could I possibly know how to pilot a civilian starship?”
Annie chimed in, “Just so you know, Layla’s a freshman, too.”
The guy’s face turned bright red.
Everyone looked at Evan. He took a deep breath, steeling himself, then said, “Alright, Layla. I trust you. Just tell us what the plan is.”
“The ship’s about to get hit hard. The secure pod outside the central control room is the safest place we’ve got. Get everyone in there and make sure they don’t panic,” Layla instructed.
“And then?” Evan asked.
“We wait,” Layla said.
“Alright!” Evan replied.
He took the others out. Some people still had their doubts about Layla, but she had bigger things to worry about right now.
She immediately slammed her hand down on the controls, bringing the ship to life.
Annie asked nervously, “Layla, is there anything I can do?”
“Stand guard at the door for me. Make sure nobody comes in and interrupts me while I’m piloting.” Layla replied.
“You think someone might actually try to mess with you?” Annie gasped.
“Yeah,” Layla replied neatly.
She stared straight ahead, taking a deep breath.
“Too bad this isn’t a military ship,’ she thought. ‘If it were, we could actually fight back.
For now, all they could do was dodge and buy time.
The reason Layla went with this plan was simple. After watching the rebels, she realized their moves were creepily in sync, almost like a bunch of bots running on autopilot.
Hence, she went for such a bold, flexible strategy.
The ship slowly lifted off, and the relentless barrage outside finally quieted down a bit. The survivors, still rattled, erupted in
cheers.
“We’re saved!” someone yelled.

Chapter 91
“Those damn rebels! Once we get back to Alpha Prime, we’ll get the army to hunt them down for good,” another passenger snarled,
Some folks were grieving for family and friends lost to the rebels, but for most, it was pure relief at surviving the nightmare,
Everyone crowded into the secure pod, but a few were still grumbling, wanting to go back to their cozy private cabins.
Evan shrugged with a helpless look. “Those cabins are on the outer edges of the ship. They’ll be the first to get hit. If you want to die, suit yourselves.”
“But we’re already taking off. Why are we still getting attacked?” someone shouted.
Just then, the ship jolted violently as the rebel ships closed in, hot on their tail.
The passengers were too scared to even think about going back to their cabins now. They just huddled together, praying for a miracle.
“Why are we moving so slowly? Don’t you see they’re about to catch up to us?” someone yelled in a panic.
“Seriously? Why are we heading back instead of escaping?” another passenger cried out.
Furious and confused, a bunch of passengers started storming toward the control room.
They just couldn’t wrap their heads around why the ship wasn’t blasting off and leaving the planet behind. Instead, it was just going in circles.
Evan finally understood that keeping the passengers calm was no easy job at all. Layla hadn’t given him an easy task.
No matter how much he tried to reason with them, some people still forced their way past him and stormed toward the control room.
“Hey, you! The girl on the intercom. What the hell are you doing? Why aren’t you getting us out of here? Do you want us all dead or what?” one of them yelled.
But just as he reached the door, Annie sent him flying back out with a swift kick,
She stood there, dagger in hand, looking ready to throw down. “Nobody gets in here and messes with Layla while she’s flying the ship. If it weren’t for her, you’d all be dead already.”
The guy stared at Annie, clutching his chest, totally dumbfounded. “You… You really just hit me?”
“If you’re too dumb to listen, then you get a beating,” Annie snapped.
Evan finally realized what was going on and hurried over with a few people to block the way. Whether the rest would actually stay put in the secure pod was out of his hands now.
It was total chaos outside. Layla could hear Annie getting into it with a few more people, but Layla’s gaze stayed icy and locked straight ahead, focused on the controls and refusing to flinch.
With a perfect turn, Layla’s slick maneuver caused two rebel ships to smash right into each other.
A massive fireball lit up the vastness of space.
The flames danced across the glass, and Layla saw her own reflection staring back at her.
‘Atlas will arrive soon,’ she thought, her faith unwavering.
