Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 167

Chapter 167

Lillian’s POV

At the last moment, I lifted the plush lion I had won. The knife plunged through the lion’s head, the blade stopping less than an inch from my face. At once, I threw it aside. Just in time.

Giving up on the blade, the assassin came at me with his fists instead. I wasn’t the best at hand to hand combat. Most of my training was with weapons, because my wolf was never the strongest, but Teacher had taught me a few self-defense moves in our training, relying on speed rather than strength.

I dodged out of the way of the attacker’s grasp, and as he stalked close once more, I shot my hand out and punched him directly in the throat. He coughed, stumbling backwards. I took the opportunity to knee him in the groin, and he fell down.

Yet, just as he fell, the second assassin lunged at me, blade at the ready. I ducked to the side, but not before the blade sliced my arm. It was a light wound, more a scratch but deep enough to draw blood, which started dripping down my arm.

I didn’t make it far away, before he turned and kicked me in the stomach. I dropped, clutching my stomach. The assassin came closer, still holding his blade. I pushed myself up to my knees, looking up, but I’d never be able to move away fast enough from this attack.

Eyes wide, fear rising, my heart called out for Grayson.

Then, as if I had summoned him from thin air, he appeared as a flash of fur and muscle, pouncing on the assassin in wolf form. Without hesitation, his teeth went straight for the attacker’s throat, and he tore it straight out. The man did not get up again.

The other attacker, seeing the fate of the first, pushed to his feet and started to run. Grayson immediately turned his sharp eyes to him.

“Don’t kill him!” I called out. “We need answers!”

Grayson glanced at me and chuffed. He was unhappy about it, but I knew then that he would let that man live. He bounded forward, after the man, and jumped. He landed on his back, shoving him face-first down into the dirt. There he stayed until the guard came to arrest the man. Then, Grayson shifted back to human.

“Know that you only live by the Luna Princess’s kindness,” Grayson growled. “The woman you tried to kill is your savior.”

The attacker hung his head as he was hauled away.

Whispers started among the crowd.

“This was supposed to be a safe event.”

“Did the Rogues already break the treaty?”

“Who were those men?”

“I want to go home.”

Grayson walked to me and took my hand. Without slowing, he pulled me away from the crowd. We walked straight out of the festival. Others were around us, many leaving after my attack.

In the parking lot, buffered by parked cars, Grayson tugged on my hand and pulled me into his arms. He dropped

his nose into the space between my neck and shoulder, breathing me in. He was covered in blood, none of it his

wn, and likely getting it all over me. In this moment, I didn’t mind.

My heart was racing so fast, my adrenaline surging. I had nearly died here today, would have if Grayson hadn’t appeared to rescue me. The whispers after the attack hadn’t been wrong. This was supposed to be a protected space, a cause for celebration. Who were those men to attack me? Were they disgruntled rogues? Or was there something else going on?

“I almost lost you,” Grayson growled. “Again.”

“You made it in time,” I said. “I’m here. I’m safe.”

He shook his head. “Only because of Odette’s warning.”

I blinked. “Her warning?”
