Chapter 175

Lilian’s POV

“Lillian,” Grayson said, his voice tight. “Perhaps we should speak about this privately.”

“Yes,” I said, as I pressed down hard on my emotions, not wanting to reveal too much to Benedict and Odette, who were looking between Grayson and me like we were in some kind of tennis match and not just speaking to

each other.

“Odette, I’m afraid I have to step away now, to speak with my wife,” Grayson said to her, filling me with a bit of vicious delight which I condemned myself for feeling. I had suspicions about Odette, but they weren’t facts. I didn’t need to feel joy at her being dismissed. That was just mean.

But… I couldn’t help it. The jealousy made me mean.

“I understand,” Odette said, unwinding his arm from his.

“Benedict, I’m sorry,” I said.

“Don’t worry a bit about it,” he said. With a wink at Grayson, he added, “If you ever want to join the black sheep club, just let me know. I’m always happy to offer support. And please, keep the flowers.” To Odette, “May I offer you my arm?”

“No, thank you,” Odette said, and started walking off.

Benedict shrugged, then turned away too.

Grayson motioned for us to go into the nearby office, and I obliged. When we entered, he closed the door behind him, so we could be alone.

I’d never been in this room before. It had bookcases and a desk, but was mostly empty of any personal effects. It didn’t feel like anyone’s personal assigned office, but just one on hand, likely for guests.

Grayson took two steps into the office. He wasn’t facing me, just breathing deeply. Then he sighed. When he turned to me, his anger shone a bit more clearly on his face. I was inwardly happy that he didn’t feel the need to hide his true emotions with me like he had with others. But I wasn’t overly thrilled that anger was his current

emotion of choice.

Though, anger matched what I felt inside too.

“Get rid of the flowers,” he said, gesturing to the bouquet I still held.

I raised them toward me, holding them more protectively now. “They are just a gift from a friend. Ben saw I was feeling down and he wanted to make me smile. He did make me smile.”

Grayson frowned deeper. “Uncle Benedict doesn’t just want to be your friend. He has… untoward intentions toward you, I’m sure of it.”

“I don’t believe that,” I said. “He’s never been anything but a perfect gentleman.”

“So far.”

“Grayson.”

“Just get rid of the flowers, Lily.”

“No,” I said firmly.

We glared at each other.

Why were you with Odette?” I asked.

“She’s on our side,” Grayson said at once. “She’s not a threat to us.

“Are you so sure about that? She’s part of that political marriage the Council keeps pushing on you.”

“She’s not part of that. She’s just an innocent bystander in the political storm.”

“I find that very hard to believe.”

“It’s the truth,” Grayson said, and took a step nearer to me. As he neared, some of his anger cooled. Oddly, the same thing happened to me. Something about his closeness calmed me more than upset me. “Please get rid of the flowers.”

I looked down at them. “They are pretty. I thought they might brighten our room.”

“I will buy you flowers every day if you get rid of those ones,” he said.
