The next morning, as I was about to go about my day, I was approached by both Lone Archer and Prime Beta. It was unusual to see them together, I thought, and even stranger when they asked to speak with me privately. The strangeness added urgency, so I agreed without questions and led them to my personal office in the palace.

“What is this about?” I asked when the door was closed and the three of us were standing around my desk, looking at each other.

“Lone Archer and I have recently discovered that we have both been digging into the truth of the rogue attacks) not just on Lillian, but on you and on Odette as well,” Prime Beta said. “We’ve since combined forces, comparing notes, and we’ve made enough discoveries now to present our findings to you.”

I would have liked to been involved from the start, but better late than never, I supposed. Still, Lone Archer’s involvement in this surprised me. He seemed loyal to the rogues, even having led a part of them. Would he truly be unbiased in his research?

Lone Archer caught me looking at him. “I understand your suspicion with me,” he said. “But my intentions are genuine. The rogues I led were honest but hard-pressed. That was a noble goal, if it was true. Lillian trusted Lone Archer implicitly, which, combined with his reputation as a legend and a hero, made me want to trust him too. But the man had many mysteries, and kept them all close to his chest. His true motives for anything were laced with secrecy.

For now, I wouldn’t press, but my suspicions stayed with me, hidden but ever in consideration in my mind.

Lone Archer seemed content with that arrangement, because he didn’t continue to try to argue in his defense.

“What have you found?” I asked.

“We followed Ophelia’s money,” Prime Beta said, wincing slightly as he said his sister’s name.
