Chapter 178

Lillian’s POV

Something was bothering Grayson. When he was with me, he seemed preoccupied, his thoughts always elsewhere. He was gone long hours, leaving early in the morning and returning late at night, just before bed, which he would crawl into exhausted and fall asleep. Though he would always reach for me first, holding me closely before he closed his eyes.

Those nights kept our bond strong, even without the sexual intimacy. Seeing Odette at the daily ladies’ events helped too. Wherever Grayson was, he wasn’t with her, so I had no cause for jealousy. The daily flowers he had delivered to the room were one more benefit that warmed me.

But I still found myself wondering, just where was he? And what was he up to?

That night, as he came back tired, I stopped him as he came out of the bathroom, before he could crawl into bed as was seeming to be his routine.

“Is there something going on?” I asked him. “You’ve been so busy lately, and we haven’t had time to connect. Are you feeling well?”

“I apologize,” he said. His gaze fell away from my face. “I’ve had a lot of duties to attend to. I will attempt to make time for us. There’s that dinner tomorrow night with my family and guests.”

“You usually want to skip those dinners,” I said, surprised.

“I’ve been neglecting my Luna Princess,” he said, his gaze returning to me. “It’s important that they know you are important to this family.” He stepped closer. “And to me.”

He kissed me, and all of my complaints slipped out of my mind.

The next evening, Grayson made a point to return from whatever he had been doing early enough for us to dress in our finery and attend the dinner. As we entered the dining room, the royal family was there, as were some of their most trusted advisors and guests, including Odette.

Josephine spotted us and waved, before returning to her conversation with Reginald. They seemed to be speaking quite passionately about something, likely arguing, though neither seemed upset to be doing so. Josie was even smiling a little, and Reginald seemed amused.

Benedict saw us next and walked over. He was already holding a glass of red wine, half-empty.

Grayson frowned deeper and deeper as Ben drew near, but he made no motion to pull us away, instead bracing himself for this inevitable confrontation, his hand squeezing mine, the muscles in his arms tensing.

“Greetings, my friends. Lillian. Grayson.” Benedict was all smiles.
