Chapter 180 Grayson’s POV

Anger simmered inside of nie, a low and steady flame.

If Benedict had meant the words from a place of concern for Lillian, because of their friendship, I might have felt some measure of compassion, or even guilt. Truth was, there had been times where I didn’t show Lily quite as much kindness as I should have. Maybe she really did deserve someone sweeter and gentler than me.

But when I thought of another man touching her, my blood turned to lava.

Benedict wasn’t being concerned though, he was being jealousy. He was only saying that I didn’t deserve Lillian, because he thought that he himself did.

“Even if she left me,” I said, “she wouldn’t turn to you. She only sees you as a friend.”

“For now,” Benedict said. “But every heart-sore woman needs a friend’s shoulder to cry on. And after enough time has passed, she might become accustomed to that shoulder, especially when the man it’s attached to treats her better than you ever could.”

“You are fooling yourself,” I snapped.

“And you should be focusing on Odette, shouldn’t you?” Benedict replied in a similar curt tone. “Everyone is talking about the importance of the peace treaty. You could make an alliance that serves our kingdom for generations to come. Odette wants you, anyway. It’s obvious. Go with her and leave Lily to a man who would actually make her happy.”

“I make my wife happy.”

“Do you? Then why does she wander these halls like a ghost more often than not? Why do I have to pick her up when her emotions or on the floor?” Benedict asked, pointed question after pointed question. “If you make her happy, why does she always look so damn happy.”

“What do you know?” I growled, unable to hold back my rising anger any longer. Those simmering embers were becoming a wildfire, burning hot and fast. My hands curled to fists. My wolf paced in my mind.

Unleash me, it grumbled.

I barely held it back, my will threatened when all I really wanted to do was allow my wolf to tear my uncle to shreds for daring to spew such insolence. Such lies.
