Chapter 181
Don’t call him that,” I said at once. Sure, especially in the beginning of their knowing each other, Grayson was a bit of a bully, and he still had that side to him sometimes. But he was also so much more. He was protective, and caring, and tender, especially in the quiet moments.
He was a good man, a good leader, a generous lover. He was the kind of man that I wanted to stand beside and support. The kind of man I wanted to love.
And maybe did love.
“I would if he’d stop giving me reason to,” Ben said, his gaze slicing over to Grayson, who continued to steam.
I touched Grayson’s arm, worried he might hit Benedict with full force, perhaps putting him through the wall. This was no place for that. This was supposed to be a pleasant dinner event, and they hadn’t even eaten yet.
My touch seemed to jolt Grayson, and he pulled his intense focus away from Ben and onto me instead.
I opened my mouth to say his name once more, but before I even could, his arm was around me and he was leading me out of the dining room. In the hallway, he pulled me into an alcove near a window and said, “Stay away from Benedict.”
I was momentarily stunned by the suddenness of his outburst as well as the sharp intensity of his gaze. His eyes flashed red, as they did when he was ready to shift into his wolf.
Whatever he and Benedict had talked about had been enough to send him spiraling.
“He’s been lying to you,” Grayson continued, a growl underlying his human voice, his wolf so near. “He wants to steal you away.”
The words made me gasp. Was that what he was worried about?
Lifting a hand, I dared to bring it closer to his face, pressing it to his cheek.
I didn’t know exactly what words had been passed between Grayson and Ben, but I could imagine that Grayson must have construed whatever it was into believing that Ben wanted me romantically. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Ben was a good friend, but that was all he was and all he would ever be.
To be acting like this, Grayson had to simply be jealous.
