Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 182

Chapter 182

Lillian’s POV

I froze as Teacher came nearer. He reached for the sword I held, and I gave it over without question. He inspected it, turning it over in his hands, his gaze raking over every inch. Then he looked up, those same assessing eyes searching my face.

“How long have you been able to do this?” he asked.

“Never,” I told him. “This has never happened before. I’m not sure how it happened this time…”

Teacher’s face was unreadable, as he handed me back my sword. “Do it again,” he said.

“I don’t know if I can.”

“Try.”

Nodding, I moved toward a new training dummy, the last one nothing but a heap of debris. Teacher backed up, giving me more than enough room in case I were to lose myself.

I straightened up, trying to channel the same anger as before. With a growl, I lifted my sword and –

My sword clanked against the wooden skeleton of the training dummy, stopping there. Whatever burst of strength that had filled me before was utterly gone now. I felt depleted, empty… normal.

How strange, that sudden onslaught of power had showed me just how empty I usually felt. My wolf was usually so weak, so quiet. When I’d had that strength… was that what more powerful wolves felt like all the time?

I tried a couple of more times, all from different angles, attacking the training dummies from this way and that. But never again was I able to replicate that strength to destroy the training dummy.

Eventually, Teacher moved closer, as if he could sense that I wasn’t so dangerous anymore.

“Stop,” he said.

I looked at him. “What was that, Teacher? You saw it, right? I really did that?”

The training dummy was still in a pile of splinters and straw, proof of what had happened. Teacher and I both looked at it, without saying a word. He never answered my question. If he knew what was happening to me, he wasn’t sharing a word.

Grayson’s POV

“Are you sure you are up for this?” I asked Prime Beta. We were in the dungeons, outside of Ophelia’s cell. Like the mercenary, she had her own room hidden away behind a metal door. Unlike mercenary, she had been given some books to read, a rare special treatment in this place. I still had mixed feelings about it, but Odette had been insistent. She hadn’t wanted her sister to entirely lose her mind.

“Are you still doubting my loyalty?” Prime Beta asked.

“No,” I said firmly. “But this might be difficult for you regardless. She is still your sister.”

“She is a traitor,” Prime Beta said. “She knows things, and I will have those secrets uncovered.”

I nodded. “We are in agreement. But if your remaining affections for her make you uncomfortable at any point, you can leave. I will not judge you or think less of you.”

“Thank you, but that will not be necessary. I can handle this.”

Pressing the issue would only offend him, so I let it go. Turning toward the door, I nodded for the guard to unlock and open it. They did and then stepped to the side.

Walking in, I saw that Ophelia had been given more gifts since I’d last come here. A down comforter was draped over her cot, and she had been brought a comfortable looking tall-backed chair where she was sitting, reading her book by the light of a standing lamp that had been placed beside the chair.

Prisoners weren’t supposed to have these kinds of comforts. Odette, who had asked for the books, had to have arranged these comforts as well. Odette might have been a friend of the family, but these gifts were inappropriate for a traitor. I would have to speak to her about this, to stop her from continuing this.

I’d also have to speak to the guards for allowing it.

As we walked in, she stood in surprise, her book falling to the ground.

“Prince Grayson…”

“Someone has made you comfortable here, I see,” I said, disapproving.
