I turned toward the door, just as it opened and Grayson was there. Usually he returned later, but this early return could be part of his promise to spend more time together.

“Were you going to meet my uncle?” Grayson said. “Are you disappointed I arrived in time to stop you?”

“I thought about it,” I said honestly.

Growling, he crumpled the note into a tight ball.

“Don’t misunderstand,” I said quickly, realizing my error. “My intention was not to trigger some kind of

romance.”

“Talk faster,” he said, his anger growing like the tension in his body. He’d never hurt me, I knew that. But if I didn’t stop him, he was liable to go after Benedict.

“I miss my friend,” I said. “All of this… weirdness that arose between me and him makes me uncomfortable. I thought if I could talk to him alone, if I could convince him to let this go, that he might actually do that. If he knew his feelings weren’t returned, maybe he would put them aside and we could be friends again.”

Grayson’s eyes narrowed.

“I was going to reject his romantic feelings,” I insisted.

“I don’t know if I believe that.”
