Chapter 190
Lillian’s POV
That morning, I sat at my brother’s bedside, holding his small, cold hand in mine. There hadn’t been much change since last time. He was still getting worse, but it was gradual. There was nothing I could do but sit at his side and watch it happen. I felt so helpless.
I’d come to know the doctors and nurses fairly well, at least the ones who were always in and out of my brother’s room. Some of them told me possibilities, though so far, every diagnosis has proven false. The doctors scratched their heads. No treatments were working. No cures.
My brother’s wolf was working against him, fighting every treatment like it was the poison that had hurt him. It was too juvenile to communicate, too inexperienced to know that in trying to help my brother, it was killing him.
And all any of us could do was what it happen.
Today, one of the nurses sat with me for a while, during her break. She seemed nervous to speak at first, but after a kind smile passed between us, she opened up.
“I’ve heard rumor of a possible cure,” she said. “It’s the stuff of legends. It might not even exist.”
“I want to know everything,” I said. “There’s nothing I won’t look into or try.”
She nodded. “There’s a flower. It’s been known to have curative properties. But it’s so rare, some people believe it no longer exists. It was over-picked, and now it can only be found high up in the mountains, where the trees thin out and it’s cold, almost enough to snow. It’s called the silver crystal flower, because the petals shimmed like crystals.”
“Where in the mountains?” I asked. “Do you know where specifically?”
“No one knows anymore. It’s beyond the roads. You’d have to hike. But surely… Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything.”
“Show me where,” I said. “I’ll get a map. Show me exactly where this flower is believed to grow.” “Absolutely not,” Grayson said an hour later when I presented him with a map and a plan.
“I know it’s a longshot, but isn’t everything worth a try?” I asked.
He shook his head. “It’s far too dangerous. That area is beyond the roads, beyond civilization. There is nothing up there but cliffs, snow, and predators. And I have too many pressing matters here. The peace agreement is hanging on by a thread. If I leave, everything will fall apart.”
“I understand. You stay, and I’ll go.”
“Lillian -”
“Then I’ll take a guard,” I said. “Please, Grayson. This is for my brother. I can’t just let him die.”
