Chapter 191

do,” I said, leaning into him, into the comfort I knew I would soon have to go a few days without. “I promise.”

Ophelia’s POV

“Please,” I said through the opening in the door where the guards were passing my food tray to me. “Please deliver this letter to Clara. It’s so important.”

“I’ve told you before, no,” the guard said. “There’s to be no correspondence between you and the outside world. Now stop asking or I will personally take away your pens and paper.”

He’d threatened that before and still hadn’t. This argument has been going on for days now, with neither of us willing to back down.

The guard was under orders, I knew that, but he wasn’t properly grasping the importance of this situation. /

“Please, just give her the letter. She’s someone of little consequence. I don’t even like her that much, but she is the only one who might actually read this and understand.”

“Forget it.”

“Please,” I pleaded. “You don’t understand. This is a matter of life and death!”

The guard paused. “Whose life?”

Finally! “The Luna Princess is in danger.”

“You were the danger for the Luna Princess.”

“I was, but I’m not know. Please. Clara is the princess’s friend. She’ll understand.”

He looked at the letter, unsure.

“Please,” I said once more.

Finally he snatched it out of my hand. “We’ll see if I get around to it. This isn’t a promise of delivery.”

It wasn’t, but it was enough. I had done my part. This was the most I could do.

Relief flooded through me. “Thank you.”
