Chapter 195

Lillian’s POV

Even as fueled with determination as I was, I knew, realistically, that I wouldn’t be able to carry Grayson across any great distance. After moving him up against the cliff-face that the river had cut through the mountain, making sure he was protected from any distant views, I went searching along the river for a way out. Or a place to properly hide.

Not too far down the river, I found a cave in the rock. It wasn’t too deep, and I saw no traces of animal bones or feces. This didn’t seem to be the home of any predator or other creature. Satisfied it would hold us, I remembered its location and went back to where I had left Grayson.

Carrying him, I had to take frequent breaks. But eventually, I made it to the cave, relieved when he was safely tucked away out of side behind the rock. I wished I could start a fire, but the smoke would draw eyes. But I could leave us both in these freezing clothes.

“Come on, Lily. You’ve seen each other naked dozens of times now. He needs your body heat. Don’t be a coward.”

Taking off my clothes and then helping him out of his, while respectfully trying not to look, I took our clothes nearer the opening of the cave and laid them where the sun was peering in, to try to dry them. Then, with haste, I returned inside, and wrapped myself around Grayson, trying to chase away the chill from the water.

Like out of instinct, Grayson closed his arms around me too, and held me close. We stayed like that for a while, until the sun started to set. We were dry and warm by then, so I slipped out of his arms, relieved to find that the sun had dried our clothes as well. I dressed first, then started to help Grayson back into his clothes. As I turned him over, and saw the silver wound, my heart dropped.

The wound wasn’t bleeding, but it hadn’t healed either. Instead, the scab that formed was pure black, with black tendrils lacing out across the full of his back.

The silver poison was running rampant. And I didn’t have any medicine.

Except…

I grabbed my satchel and opened it. Knowing I would be traveling in the snow, I had bought a water resistant bag. It hadn’t kept the things within fully dry, but they were dryer than they would have been without.
