Chapter 197
Lillian’s POV
The words struck me like an arrow through the heart, and I was immediately affected, immediately warmed by the power of those three simple words. I love you.
But how could I accept them? The fear of being hurt and rejected wrapped around me like armor, keeping me from fully accepting his love for fear that it might not be genuine. That he didn’t mean it. He was injured, by silver poisoning no less. He could be saying these things out of desperation, not truth.
“You are delirious,” I said.
“I’m not,” he replied.
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I do.” He lifted a hand and placed it on my cheek. On instinct, I leaned into his warmth without even meaning to “I love you, Lily.”
His gaze burned into mine, and I didn’t have anywhere left to run. He could see straight through me. For the first time, he allowed me to see straight through him as well. He lowered his defenses, the cool façade he usually wore, and I could see all the way down to his soul. The soul that shone brightly with love for me.
He was being genuine. There was no denying it.
He loved me.
“Grayson…” My voice cracked on his name, emotion flooding through me. I held so much affection for him that it could have burst from me. At once, my protective walls tumbled down, and I surged forward into his arms. Those strong arms wrapped around me, holding me close.
Would that I could have stayed there, just like this, forever. I opened my mouth, wanting to return his love, to tell him how much I adored him too, but he spoke first. He wouldn’t have been able to see the way my mouth opened, or known at all that I had wanted to speak.
“You understand now why you have to leave me here,” he whispered. “Go. Save yourself. That’s what matters to me most.”
“I won’t,” I said, hardening myself again. With danger so close, this wasn’t the time to fully confess our love to one another. My heart had been right to be defensive, in part. Grayson had only told me he loved me because he thought this was the end.
