Chapter 214

Grayson’s POV

+15 Bonus

With Lillian’s words of rejection, a crack formed inside of me, zigzagged through my chest. My heart felt crushed. My soul felt as if it was being ripped away from me. I placed a hand to my chest, trying to contain it, to stop the metaphysical bleeding that was tearing me apart, but I was fighting a losing battle.

Gritting my teeth, I growled, my wolf adding its assistance to my plight.

Can’t lose… our mate…

“Don’t fight it, Grayson. Please,” Lillian said, her voice as heartbroken as I felt inside.

As much as I wanted to please her, I couldn’t grant her request. I would do absolutely anything for her, except this. Never this.

“I won’t let you go,” I bit out through grit teeth.

“Grayson, please.”

“No.” My wolf emerged in my voice, making the word sound monstrous. I didn’t recognize myself in this moment. Rage mixed with pain. My wolf was at the front of my thoughts, nearly taking over. I could barely think straight.

I was still in my tuxedo, still dressed to meet Lillian in front of the court and my family to have an official ceremony to make her my wife. She was still in her white wedding dress. We should have been in the throne room now, exchanging our vows or afterwards, celebrating our love with a party.

Not this.

Now she wanted to leave me, doubting my ability to take care of her. To protect her.

Why wouldn’t she doubt, when her own brother died on my watch?

I had to prove myself again, and I would. She didn’t have to leave. In fact, I insisted that she stay.

“You are not leaving,” I growled, clutching my chest tighter, like I could hold our bond together by force. I would try, even if futile, with the full of my strength. “You will stay here. House arrest. Until you come to your senses.”

“Grayson.”

“No, Lily. You must stay. You will see. I will prove myself.”

“You have to let me go.”

“Never.”

“You don’t understand, I -”

“You are in shock from your brother’s death. You aren’t thinking clearly. You are unstable -”

She gasped, and too late did I realize my error. I had meant her connection with her wolf was frayed, a result of her pain. I hadn’t meant to say the same words that the rumors were whispering. Yet, looking at her face, I could see that I had cut her just as deeply. My intention mattered little compared to what I had actually said.

I was in too much pain for softness, too angry at what was happening to apologize the way she deserved. I could barely think straight. Just as she was in shock, so was I.

“Stay here until I allow you to come out.”

Her face hardened. She didn’t say anything.

Turning, I walked out of the room. In the hallway, I slammed her door behind me. Prime Beta was there waiting.

“Put a guard on this door,” I growled. “She is not allowed to leave.”

Prime Beta’s eyes widened in surprise but he nodded. “Yes, Alpha.”

I didn’t move until Prime Beta complied, calling for a guard then giving them instruction to protect the door and to keep the Luna Princess from leaving.
