“If Grayson learns the truth about your being pregnant, he really would never let you go,” Clara said. “He’d chase you to the ends of the earth, even into another kingdom.”

“I told the doctors not to tell him,” I said.

“I’m not sure that’s enough,” Teacher said. “The doctor backs you now, but when you are gone, Grayson will look closer into your records and documents. Even if the doctor continues to hold his tongue for you, the records won’t lie. Grayson will find the truth.”

“Then he’ll come after you,” Clara said.

“Unless…” Ivory started. We all looked at her. “We could leave forged documents for him to find. We can’t change the blood tests, right? So we can’t exactly hide the pregnancy entirely. But we can smudge a few documents…”

“What are you suggesting?” I asked.

“It will hurt him,” I said. “I don’t want to hurt him.”

Clara gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “Hurting him is the only way to save him. Isn’t that why you’re doing this?”

She was right.

I hated to hurt him, yet I just kept doing so again and again. I hated everything about this plan, but it was too late to turn back now. I wasn’t sure I would turn back even if I could.

“I can help you forge the documents,” Ivory said. “I worked for a bit as a doctor’s assistant.”

“And I have some authority,” Clara said. “I can sneak the paperwork where it needs to be.”

“That still leaves the guard at the door,” I said.

“Don’t worry about him,” Teacher replied. “I’ll take care of it. And I’ll bring you some more inconspicuous clothes.”

I looked down at my dress and my heart ached.

“Tonight, Lillian, we will go. Prepare yourself.”
