Grayson’s POV
“What are you doing out here?” I asked them. Looking around, I couldn’t see their parents anywhere. “Where is your mom and dad?”
“We don’t have a dad,” the little girl said.
“We left Mom at home,” said the little boy.
“We’re on an ad…adventure!” said the little girl.
“We’re ad…ven…turers…” the little boy agreed, fumbling through the word before nodding afterwards with approval.
The little girl nodded too. “I’m Madison. Maddy for short.”
“I’m Alex,” said the little boy.
“I’m Grayson,” I told them.
These children were too friendly. Any stranger could come by and take them. Returning errant children wasn’t in the job description of a prince, but I couldn’t allow any harm to come to any member of my kingdom, especially
children.
The trick would be to convince them to return home, when they seemed quite set on going on an adventure.
“You know,” I said, thawing when talking to these children in a way I hadn’t in five years, “the best and bravest adventurers always tell their mom where they are going.”
Madison’s eyes went wide. “They do?”
Alex seemed more suspicious. “Is that for real?”
“It is. Adventurers don’t want their parents to worry,” I said.
Alex frowned then. “We don’t like making mom worry…”
“We are brave,” Madison insisted. “Does that mean we should tell Mom?”
“Yes,” I said. “That’s what adventurers do best. Talk to their parents.”
Alex and Madison looked at each other, then back to me. “Okay!”
For the first time in five long years, I smiled a miniscule amount, the very edges of my lips twitching up into a smile.
Holding each of their hands, I followed as they directed back to their house. It was more a cottage really, a small one-story house sitting on a field covered in wildflowers. A moving van was out front, the family must have just moved in.
“This is where you live now?” I asked them.
“Uh huh!” Madison said brightly.
“It’s small,” Alex admitted. “We lived in a bigger house before.”
“A huge house!” Madison agreed. “But we had to share it. It’s just us now.’

Perhaps a recent divorce then. I tried not to pry overmuch. These kids were very trusting. They seemed like the kind who would tell a stranger absolutely everything. Their mother must have been a kind woman too, but I worried for her, with such trusting children.
I could have walked the kids back to their door. Maybe I should have. But I suspected their mother would have been mortified if I showed up to return her children. I was the prince, after all. If she was recently divorced, she likely had enough on her plate.
“You better get back now,” he told the kids.
“You aren’t coming with us?” Madison asked, looking at me with doe eyes so wide, I was severely tempted to do whatever she wanted me to do.
“No, I don’t think your mom would like that,” I said. “You two hurry along.”
“Will you come by later?” Alex asked.
