Chapter 221

Lillian’s POV

Suspecting I wouldn’t find much more detail within the palace itself, I decided to track the places I knew Teacher stayed or visited. His old apartment had been leased to someone else, a nice couple moving to the city from the country. The bartender from the bar he frequented remembered him, but it was the same story.

“He disappeared five years ago without even a word. If you see him, tell him to drag his sorry ass back here. He still has a tab to close.” Under her breath, she muttered, “The last time I ever do any favors…”

Without finding any luck at his usual haunts, I went toward the borderlands instead, wondering if he returned to his life among the rogues. To my knowledge, the peace treaty that Grayson and Teacher had brokered all those years ago was still holding, and there weren’t many skirmishes on the edges of the border anymore. Rather, everyone had turned their attention and their warriors to the situation with the Bear shifters of the north.

Or so I thought. As I approached the border town, I heard signs of a fight off to the left. Could someone be in trouble? Shifting to my wolf, I rushed toward the sounds.

A fight was deep in the forest, one man fighting back a whole group of rogues, seven or eight of them. It was hardly a fair fight, but the lone figure was holding his own.

He was an Alpha.

Grayson.

What in the world was he doing out here?

When his back was turned, one of the rogues pounced, dagger aimed for Grayson’s back. I wasn’t going to allow that. In wolf form, I tackled the man, sending him off kilter. He fumbled and fell down onto the dirt.

I growled in warning.

The group of rogues, who had been so willing to fight a single man, worried at the sight of a wolf beside the Alpha. They all looked at each other, and then took off running.

Staying in wolf form, I waited until the rogues moved far enough way, their retreat clear and not a deception. Then, I turned, wanting to make my own escape.

I had questions for Grayson about why he was here on his own, all alone, but I swallowed them down. What was more important was escaping before he could recognize me.

Yet, just as I was about to take my first step, he spoke, his voice nothing but a whisper, carried on the wind. ” Lillian?”

I froze.
