Chapter 226
Lillian’s POV
I stared at the necklace, the painting, trying to understand the connection, but without knowing who this woman was, I had no idea how she could be connected to my mother or to the Lycan Kingdom. I wasn’t even sure where to start to sort that out.
“Are you lost, Lillian?” said the authoritative voice of the Queen from behind me. I turned to find her sneering at me coldly. She had never been kind to me, but this was worse. She was looking at me like I was lower than dirt.
I supposed I could understand her reasoning. To her, I had abandoned Grayson and the kingdom, and moved to the Lycan kingdom without word or explanation. She must have seen me as a kind of traitor, even though I had never made a move against any of them and wouldn’t.
“I’m not lost,” I explained. “I was just looking to borrow some books.”
“That’s improper,” the Queen said. “You haven’t yet presented yourself and your intentions in front of the court”
“I’m the Lycan Ambassador,” I said, guessing that she had already known that, and that she was just trying to make things difficult for me.
“All the more reason for you to present yourself then. There is a correct way of doing things, Lillian, and while you never took much care for tradition in the past, as a Lycan Ambassador, you are the face of the entire Lycan Kingdom now. You wouldn’t want to embarrassed the Lycan Kingdom, would you?”
“No,” I said.
“Then you must present yourself to the court. I will arrange everything at once. Please, come with me.”
I had no choice, really, unless I wanted to earn the Queen’s ire more than I had already done. So, with one last fleeting look at the portrait of the woman with her necklace, I turned and followed the Queen to the throne room.
Half an hour later, the whole of the court was assembled, including Grayson and the Elder Council.
“I am a Lycan Ambassador, sent here on a mission to help improve relations between our packs and to help strengthen the front lines in the impending war with the Bear shifters from the northern lands.”
As I gave my speech, Odette sneered at me, while she stepped closer to Grayson.
Grayson stared at me blankly, showing no emotion.
After my speech, the court clapped politely. Several approached to greet me personally, saying how nice it was to see me again. But I didn’t believe the lies. I was already well acquainted with this court. I knew they would be nice to my face, but tell terrible lies when my back is turned.
They were half the reason I had left, not wanting my children to be exposed to the dangers their lies had wrought.
I had not and would never forget how they whispered ill omen when I walked by.
Soon, even Odette herself came up to me. “Oh, Lillian. You must forgive my earlier behavior. I had no idea why you were here. After you left so suddenly, I assumed you returned only with ill intentions.”
“I have no desire to cause problems,” I said.
She hummed. Glancing around, making sure no one was close, she leaned in. “That includes for Grayson. I will not allow you to hurt him again.”

“I won’t,” I said. “I have no intentions of -”
illian,” Grayson said, suddenly behind me.
I nearly jumped out of my skin, then turned, facing him, ignoring Odette and her vague threats.
“As Lycan Ambassador, you are an honored guest,” he said. “You should move into the palace, where you can be protected and honored.”
“That’s not necessary,” I said.
“Where are you living?” Odette asked.
