Chapter 229

Lilian’s POV
I spent a little more time chatting with Benedict, before excusing myself to return to the cottage. I wanted to be there to greet the children when they returned home from school, not wanting to depend on the nanny too much, despite her presence specifically to help. These children had been a blessing to me. I wanted to spend as much time with them myself as I physically could.
They always came home from school bursting with questions, as they were both very curious. Usually their questions involved something their teacher said or the topics of the day. Today, the topic of moms and dads must have been discussed because, coming in through the door, the first thing Madison said to me after hello was, What was our real dad like?”
I froze. “It’s not… he’s…”
Both kids stopped in front of me and looked up at me with wide, eager eyes. They hung on my every word, ready to take whatever I said to heart.
What could I possibly say?
I didn’t want to give them too many details, but I also didn’t want to lie to them. Though circumstances had kept us away from Grayson, I still loved him. He hadn’t done anything wrong.
“He was a good man. Brave, he would face any danger,” I said.
“Was he tall?” Madison asked.
“Yes. He was tall.”
“Was he strong?” Alex asked.
“The strongest man I’ve ever met.”
“Was he handsome?” Madison asked.
I blushed slightly, glancing away. “Yes, he was.”
“Did he love us?” Alex asked.
I stilled a second time, the question having caught me off-guard. Grayson never really had the chance to love them. We fled before he had a chance to even know they existed.
“He would have,” I said.
In a perfect world, we would still be with Grayson. He would love his children infinitely, maybe making sure he would be here, same as me, to spend as much time with them as he could.
Regret and guilt rose within me, knowing I had denied him that. But it had only been to protect all of us, including Grayson himself, not with any malicious intent. If I could go back… If I could make sure all of us were safer…
“Grayson’s tall,” Alex pointed out.
“And handsome,” Madison said.
“And strong too. I think,” Alex said. “He seemed strong.”
Their musings roused me from my spiraling thoughts and I looked at them.

“He’d be a good new dad,” Madison decided.
Alex nodded sagely. “Yes, he would.”
They both looked at me.
“Can he be our dad now, Mom?” Alex asked.
Madison placed her hands together, her fingers curling onto the back of the opposite palm. “Please!” she whined, the word dragged out.
“That’s not a good idea,” I said.
“Why?” Alex asked.
“Grayson is just a friend, and our stay is only temporary,” I told them. “As soon as I find the person I came here to find, we will be going back home.”
“This could be our new home,” Madison said.
“No,” I told them quickly, sharper than I meant to. Their eyes went wide, and I immediately wilted. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to snap. But we can’t stay here, okay? This place isn’t as safe as our home. I only need a few days to find Teacher. A couple of weeks at most. Then we’re going back to the Lycan palace and the way things used to be.”
“Okay…” Alex said, shoulders slumping.
