Chapter 230
Lilian’s POV
I didn’t have a chance against both my kids looking at me with such hope in their eyes, especially when Grayson
was too.
The only thing I could really say was, “Okay. Just for dinner.”
“Yay!” Madison and Alex said in unison, throwing their hands up in excitement.
The corner of Grayson’s mouth twitched, a hint of a smile.
“I blame you for this,” I said, pointing at him, teasing.
“I can live with that,” he said, standing.
While I went into the kitchen to start making dinner, the kids convinced Grayson to stay in the living room with them, so they could show them their various dolls, cars, and other toys. As I listened, Grayson was split in two, playing dolls with Madison while at the same time playing cars with Alex.
“Your hair looks great today, Samantha,” Madison said.
“My car is in the lead!” Alex announced.
“Your hair looks even better,” Grayson said, and then, “Careful, a rival is catching up!”
He was so good with them, immediately fitting into a fatherly role without even knowing them all that well. Was it fate? Was Grayson such a good father than even time and distance couldn’t keep him from bonding with the children he didn’t even know were his?
He was a good man, and my heart warmed listening to them.
In a way, this moment was like a fantasy of what our life could have been like if we had been together in another life. If Grayson wasn’t a prince. If neither of our lives were burdened with the responsibility of leadership and the scrutiny of the court, royal family, and Council of Elders.
We would have still faced challenges, surely, but without the dangers of following us, we could have been happy.
My same heart that had warmed only a moment ago, now ached as well, a bittersweet feeling. I sat with those feelings as I chopped onions and went about making dinner, while keeping an ear on the play.
We were who we were, there was no changing it.
After a few minutes, Grayson paused the games and walked into the kitchen. “How can I help?”
