“He’s a good man,” I said. It was true. The man beside me was one of the best men I’d ever known. Yet since he didn’t know I meant him, he seemed troubled by the words. “There are reasons that he can’t be here.”
Grayson looked at me, searchingly, his gaze probing deeply into mine. “Do you still love him?”
I love you.
I couldn’t say that, but if I lied and said I didn’t, he’d know that too. He just wouldn’t know that I was talking about him.
I rubbed my forehead. “None of this matters. What happened, happened, and we are all here now with things as they are.”
“I understand,” Grayson said. He must have felt he did, but how could he have, truly? When he didn’t have all the facts?
Gods, opening my mouth just made things worse, didn’t it?
The conversation changed then, to how the kids were fitting in at the new school and other, harmless topics like the weather. Eventually, the casserole went into the oven and Grayson went back to playtime with the children.
When dinner was ready, the kids and Grayson came and sat at the dining room table, while I scooped out some casserole onto everyone’s plates. We said grace to the Moon Goddess and then dove into the food. Even the kids ate a lot, and they were usually very picky.
“You should visit all the time, Grayson,” Madison said.
“I’m very busy at the palace,” Grayson said. Just as Madison started to pout, he continued, “But I could swing by once a week or so.” His glance lifted to me sitting across the table from him. “Or maybe twice a week?”
If he expected me to argue, he was going to be disappointed. Though I didn’t want to bring the kids to the palace, 1 was reluctant to keep Grayson away, especially with how the children adored him. I wanted them to enjoy this time while it lasted, before we had to return to the Lycan pack.
Someday, I would tell the children the truth. I wanted them to have good memories to look back on.
The kids were laughing at something Grayson said. I hadn’t really heard it, lost in my own thoughts, my own bliss brought on by the pleasant domesticity of this moment.
But then –
Grayson and I both lifted our heads at once.
