Grayson’s POV-

Hope filled my heart that this could be a rare moment of clarity with my father. Lately, he had been so lost to the disease that was claiming his mind that it was difficult to understand what he was saying. I missed speaking with him, trading ideas and even simple pleasantries. It wasn’t easy, losing my father to his own mind. He was here in body, but gone in other ways. I missed and mourned for him, even though he was still alive. Did that make me a terrible son?

I hurried to his bedroom, where he had spent most of his days. Since his illness had become more prominent, the Queen had moved into her own room, saying she wasn’t able to handle him all the time anymore. At first I had been annoyed at her disloyalty, but as time went on, I understood. He was but a shadow of the man he once was a toddler in many ways now, needing near constant care and supervision. The Queen said she had wanted to remember him as he was.

I did too, but that didn’t mean I would turn away from him in these present moments, especially when he called for me. He might not be the same man he once was mentally, but I was still his son. It was my duty and my privilege to help care for him in his advancing age, as he had cared for me my entire life.

There were guards posted at father’s bedroom door, to protect him both from unwelcomed visitors, but to also keep him from straying. Seeing me, they stepped aside and allowed me entrance without saying a word.

Inside, father was seated on one of the high-back chairs in the sitting area. He was dazing off into space as he so often did. My heart sank, and I wondered if I had been too slow and missed my chance to speak with him. Regardless, I moved closer. He looked up at me.

A moment passed. Then too.

Then, “…son?”

I moved toward him at once, kneeling at his side. “Yes, Dad, it’s me. It’s Grayson.”
