“No, stay,” I said, gently urging him back to his chair. “I’ll check on her.”

With a long sigh, his eyes closed and he fell asleep. For a moment, I watched him, the slow rise and fall of his chest, a lump rising in my throat.

I’d been through something like this before. I knew, when he would wake, he would be a different man again, but I would treasure this moment I had been given with my father, however brief.

Standing, I walked out of the room. The guards closed the door behind me. In the hallway, the Queen was waiting for me.

“You know how he is,” she said. “You know he doesn’t have long. You have to fulfill your duty, Grayson, or when he dies, this kingdom will fall into chaos and ruin.”

“If it falls to ruin, it will be because the Council is withholding power,” I said. “Neither they nor you can force me to marry.”
