Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 238

Chapter 238

You aren’t alone now,” I said.

He didn’t look at me again, and I was a bit relieved by that. The words I was saying were too real. The remnants of our bond were still down within me, seared into me like a scar. It would not help either of us to acknowledge how deeply that wound went. There would be no repairing it.

“I should go,” he said. “I’ve kept you up long enough. Perhaps in the morning, we can have breakfast together with the children.”

“Alright,” I told him.

He nodded, and then went to the door. He left, closing the door behind him, all without looking back.

After, I went and locked the door, then returned to the couch. There, I pulled the blanket over me and finally found some sleep.

Grayson returned in the morning as promised. By then, the kids were awake, and we all had breakfast at the little table in the main room. We were just wrapping up when a servant delivered a message to me from the Queen.

“The Queen instructs that she is going to arrange a banquet to be held in your honor,” the servant said. Standing with their back straight as a curtain rod, they spoke very formally. They had to be someone knew, who didn’t yet know that I could be trusted. Or perhaps it was Grayson’s presence that had them so tense. “She said you would understand that this is tradition for honored guests.” He glanced at me. “She said I was to wait for acknowledgement.

“I want to go to a party,” Madison said.

“The rules are different here,” I told her. “Children aren’t welcome at these events.”

“I will make certain that the kids are welcome,” Grayson said. “If they want to go, they will go.”

My nervousness grew. Protecting the kids from the court included not attending court events. If we went, would I be able to assure that the kids wouldn’t be bullied or threatened by any of the court or council?

Grayson, seemingly noticing my dismay, told me, “I will protect the children with my life. And you.”

He had no idea how little that actually helped. Putting himself in danger did not bring me comfort. It was because I feared for his life against such massive danger that I had left him in the first place.

This had been the very thing I had hoped to avoid.
