Lillian’s POV
Grayson looked between me and the flower, an unreadable expression on his face.
“I’m sorry, Ben,” I said. “I don’t really have time to talk right now. We’re about to take the kids to meet with the. tutor.”
Ben looked at Grayson. “And he’s going because…?”
“To make sure things go smoothly,” he said, narrowing his eyes.
“Actually, I don’t think I need you to come with me,” I said. “I know the way.”
“But -”
“I’m capable, remember?”
In truth, I wasn’t worried about his perception of my capability. His desire to protect us, even to his own detriment, had me worried. With his presence, I had allowed some confusion, some blurring of lines. It was time to reestablish boundaries for all of our sakes.
His jaw locked and he frowned.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said, even though I really wanted to say no. Because I wanted him with us so badly, I knew for sure that he couldn’t be.
