Lilian’s POV

During our private dinner, Grayson was attentive with the children, asking them questions about their day, about their tutoring, and what they liked and didn’t like about the palace. The kids were naturally curious and had their own questions for Grayson. Many, many questions. I braced myself, worried Grayson’s patience might snap under the barrage of questioning, but he remained cool and calm, even seeming to enjoy fulfilling all of their curiosities.

I never had any reason to worry.

After dinner, the kids looked at me with a what now kind of expression. Before I could open my mouth, Grayson

had an answer.

“I have a surprise,” he said.

The kids and I all wore matching faces of intrigue now.

We left the private room and went back to the wing that held the rooms for the royal family. As we neared our bedrooms, I wondered if he’d had the surprise delivered. Instead of turning into our room though, he turned for the one across the hall.

These doors had always remained closed that I could remember. I’d never seen anyone entering or leaving. I had always assumed there was a type of storage room here, but I’d never known for sure.

Grayson opened the door and pushed it open. He clicked on the light.

The room was a playroom, filled with toys. Dollhouses, dolls, cars, a mat covered in a design with roads and houses for the cars to go on. There were some small plastic bricks for building, and even some learning tools too, like a small table covered in workbooks and construction paper.

It was a small child’s paradise, and my kids looked like they had just woken up to the best Christmas morning of

their lives.

At once, their gazes snapped from the room to Grayson.

“This is…” Madison started.

“…for us?” Alex finished.

“Yes,” Grayson said, and he finally did smile, the corners of his mouth curling up. It was kind and soft, a precious fragile thing that I wished I could protect and cherish.

“What do we say when someone gives us a gift?” I reminded the kids.
