Lillian’s POV

The night of the banquet, the children were bouncing around the room in their excitement. We were already dressed, Alex in a little suit, Madison and I in matching blue gowns. Hers had a bit more fluff at the skirts and she was giggling as she twisted at her waist, watching the skirts sway around her. My dress was a bit more form- fitting and didn’t have the same swish.
A knock sounded on the door.
“That must be Grayson,” I said and went to the door. Pulling it open, I saw him there and froze.
Goddess, he was the most handsome man I had ever laid eyes on. He wore a tuxedo that fit the long lines of his body, accentuating his height and the massive width of his shoulders. His hair was slicked back, leaving the sharp features of his face more prominently exposed. High cheekbones. A strong jaw. A pair of blue eyes that looked down into me, all the way to my soul.
His gaze dropped, taking me in, and a flash of lust crossed his eyes before he quashed it. I saw it though, before it was gone, and it sent a burst of heat through me. In another life, we would be missing this banquet, pulling each other into the bedroom and locking the door.
But that life wasn’t this one. So instead, I stepped back from the door, allowing him to come inside. At once, the children rushed forward, doting on Grayson, and Grayson doting on them.
“Tonight,” he told them, me. “Consider me your personal bodyguard for the night.” His eyes locked with mine again. “I will not be leaving your side all night.”
Relief flooded through me and I couldn’t help a smile.
Together, all of four of us, almost like a real family, walked down to the throne room. We were brought to the front of the line of those being introduced and given special privileges as the nights honored guests.
“May I present, Lycan Ambassador Lillian with her two children, Madison and Alex, being personally escorted by Prince Grayson.”
Applause greeted us as we descended the stairs.
At the base of the stairs, we immediately went to the thrones, where the King and Queen were sitting and waiting to greet us. This was part of the process, to give and receive official greetings and receive the formal welcome.
At the thrones, I stepped forward and bowed.
The Queen nodded with approval. The King looked at me with narrowing eyes.
“Thank you most kindly for such a wonderful welcome,” I said.
The King frowned deeply. “Don’t I know you…?”
“This is the Lycan Ambassador Lillian,” the Queen said. “That is how we know her, dear.”
The King ignored her, staring at me. After a moment, something sparked in his eyes. He pointed a finger at me, fire suddenly sparking within him. “You are that whore.”
Time seemed to stop.
Everyone in the room gasped and then went quiet.

The Queen turned sharply.
Grayson stepped forward. “You can’t call her that.”
My heartbeat thundered in my eyes.
Then time flowed again, too fast now.

Onlookers immediately started chattering.
Grayson continued, “She is not nor has she ever been what you are accusing her of.
The Queen stood and signaled for the King’s personal attendants, who came forward, surrounding him.
The fire within him dimmed and he seemed confused.
