Grayson’s POV

Seeing Odette smirking at me from my bed, my blood boiled in my veins. “What are you doing here?” I asked sharply, not bothering to hide my annoyance or my disgust at her presence, or at the bedroom eyes she was attempting to flash at me, like that would somehow influence me in some way other than making me even angrier.
“I know I’ve surprised you,” she said, a sticky sweetness in her voice as she bat her eyelashes at me It was the kind of look someone would give after they’d been caught doing something bad, when they were hoping to talk or flirt – their way out of it.
I was an immovable, unfeeling statue. She would find no sympathy or forgiveness inside of me.
“Get out,” I snapped.
“Grayson, if you just consider -”
“This is not a negotiation. Get out before I throw you out.”
Odette threw down the covers and rose from the bed, unexposed.
I immediately turned my back, not wishing to see her in such a state.
Her bare footfalls sounded on the floor as she approached me. She placed a hand on my shoulder. “There’s no reason for you to turn your back, Grayson. All of this. All of me. I’m yours. I’ve always been yours, since even before I rescued you in the woods. Fate has bound us together from the start. You don’t have to fight it.”
“Take your hand off my shoulder before I remove it,” I said, a growl slipping out. “Put your clothes on.”
“But -”
“Stop testing me, Odette.”
She froze for a second, but then finally starting moving, pulling back from me. “How can you be so cruel?”
“I have never made secret that my feelings for you have only been those of gratitude and friendship.”
“What more does a marriage need?” Odette asked. “If you looked at my body, you would find me pleasing. I could give you an heir and we could raise them with our friendship. We don’t need any great love between us for this to work.”
Maybe that could have worked if I hadn’t experienced love, but I had been with Lillian, in love, in body and soul. Having experienced that, I would rather be alone than ever attempt to replace the hole she left in my life. I would especially not be doing this while she rested in the room right next to mine. The only temptation I would ever feel was for her.
“If you wish to maintain my friendship, you will get dressed, walk out of this room, and pretend like none of this happened.”
The charged silence told me that she wanted to argue, but blessedly she held her tongue.
“You will regret this,” she said, and I finally heard her start to put on her clothes.
“I won’t,” I assured her.
She started walking toward the door. Confident she was wearing clothes now, I faced her. She wore only a robe and socks and slippers. Was that how she arrived her? Had she sneaked through the whole of the palace from the guest

before I could stop her, before I could demand that she put on more clothes before traipsing around the palace, she slipped into the hallway and slammed the door closed behind her.
My annoyance at the scene was quickly squashed by my relief that she was gone.
