Chapter 253
Lillian’s POV
“I’m handling things fine,” I said.

“You only think you are,” my father replied. “But behind the scenes, Odette is working against you, and she is more cunning, ambitious, and vindictive than I’ve ever been.” His gaze sharpened. “Truly, she is the daughter I wished I had.”
That was a combined insult to both me and my sister. Gods, I hadn’t thought of her in a long time. Was she even still alive? Or had father killed her off, just like he did with Ronan?
“You will understand if I don’t take your warning to heart,” I told him. “I find it difficult to trust a man who poisoned his own son.”
“Believe what you want,” Gamma said. “But if you actually want the truth, you will follow me now. I will not speak these words so publically, but in private, I will tell you. You want to know what happened the night Ronan passed? Follow me.”
He started walking toward the door.
I hesitated. Speaking with Gamma while surrounded by witnesses was one thing. Speaking to him alone in a quiet place away from onlookers was entirely another.
But to uncover the past, what was I willing to do?
Father could be lying about all this. Was I willing to take that chance?
I had to. For Ronan, and for myself. For the secrets that had haunted me for the past five years. I had to know what really happened that night, even if it meant placing myself in possible danger.
So I followed my father to the door and into the hallway.
Grayson’s POV
Eventually the servant veered off, leaving me to walk to my father’s room on my own. When I arrived, the guards stopped me.
“I’m sorry, Sir, but the King is sleeping presently.”
I gave him a curious look. “I had just been summoned. I was told my father asked for me personally.”
The two guards looked at each other.
“No servant has come in or out of this room all morning,” the guards said.
I had never been summoned. Then why…?
At once, I knew.
To get me out of the way and away from Lily.
Turning on my heel, I started to run back. I hoped I wasn’t too late, but when I returned to the throne room, Gamma and Lily were both gone.

My father led me to his guest room. As soon as I entered, some of his guard jumped out, ready to fight.
Atrap, then! But as before, my father had underestimated me. While the guards tried to grab me, I dodged their greedy hands.
I was so much stronger than I had been 5 years ago, and would not be easily over taken. I quickly incapacitated the guards by punching them directly in their weak points. It was not enough to kill them, or even permanently harm- them, but it took them out of the fight for now.
I thought, having defeated the guards, my father would back off, but instead he squared up like he intended to fight me himself.
He threw punches and while I dodged them, he moved faster than I would have thought. He had earned his Gamma title, that much was clear. I couldn’t let my guard down with him.
“They’ve trained you well,” he snapped as we fought. “But it is still not good enough to defeat me.”
“Tell me,” I growled, matching him blow for blow. “I want to know what happened that night. Ronan died. Odette wasn’t as sick as should have been to use the flower. How did it happen?”
