Chapter 255
Lillian’s POV
While I hoped Grayson wouldn’t listen to Odette, he didn’t have the best track record for being able to resist her manipulative tears. He still valued their friendship after everything she had done. The recording had been more damning against Gamma than Odette, despite what she said. If he was biased toward her, he might only hear what he wanted to hear, and missing the rest.
“Grayson, please,” Odette whispered, tears falling down her cheeks.
Grayson looked at her and sighed. Lightly, he told her, “This is the last time that our friendship will save you. I will spare your life, but you will remain under house arrest until such a time as I can determine what should be done with you.”
“But, I -”
“You have exhausted our friendship,” Grayson said. “From this moment on, it will no longer be used to shield you. And the bonds between us are forever shattered. I want nothing more to do with you ever again.”
Odette’s face froze in shock like he had struck her. Then her face fell.
Turning toward the Gamma, Grayson did not hold back. “You are hereby stripped of your Gamma title and will be held with your offending guards in the dungeons until an execution date will be set. You have offended this pack for the last time.”
“That’s outrageous!” Gamma immediately shouted, but no one came to his defense as they had seemed ready to for Odette.
My father and his guard were dragged from the room ranting and raving, but everyone turned their back. For Odette, however, they faced her and gave her grace as she was led from the room.
My heart ached. Relief should have come, knowing my father was finally going to face his end, but instead, I felt regret and grief for the father that he could have been but chose not to be. Perhaps in a different life, Ronan and I had experienced a happy childhood, with a father who cared for us.
I mourned for that life, that loss, for the reality that now had me in its grasp.
I turned my back on my father, on Odette and faced Grayson. Beside the grief was a bitter kind of anger that flourished when Grayson had chosen once more to protect Odette despite what she had done. He had said it was the last time he would protect her, and all had heard him.
But shouldn’t last time have been the last time. Or the time before that. He said he would not protect her again, but he had already protected her too much. I didn’t know if I believed him anymore.
