Chapter 259

Lillian’s POV

There were a million reasons that Grayson sleeping in my rooms was a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad idea, and most of those reasons had to do with the passionate kiss we had shared only a handful of days ago and the lingering tension that still simmered between us even now.

But, on the other hand, no one I had ever met was as strong as Grayson. If he put his mind toward the protection of the kids, then they would be safe no matter what. Of course, part of my leaving had been to protect Grayson, for fear that he would end up stretching himself too thin in our protection and endanger himself.

Now, though, the kids were actually in danger. This wasn’t just a hypothetical anymore. The note inferred the kids were in direct danger. I needed Grayson’s help. I had to put my own feelings aside and welcome him.

“Okay,

“I said. “I would appreciate it. I don’t… with the threats, I can’t… If anything were to happen to the kids…. The thought was so upsetting, I couldn’t even properly express what I meant.

“Nothing will happen to them,” Grayson said definitely, so confident and strong. With his promise of protection, I believed the kids would be alright. “Give me just a minute to finish this last bit of work and I will come back with you.”

“}

He only needed two minutes and then he stood. Silently, we walked out of his office and back toward my rooms. It was a familiar trek, one I had taken myself many times when I had lived with him five years ago. Now, I moved with muscle memory.

When we came to my rooms, I knocked and we were greeted by Ivory, who seemed relieved to see Grayson here with me.

“The kids fell asleep,” she whispered. Her own son was resting on the couch. “Let me grab my son and we’ll go.”

“Thank you, Ivory,” I told her.

“Of course,” she said and gave me a knowing smile. I replied with a sharp look. Going back, she scooped up her son into her arms and then went into the hallway. When she was gone, I closed and locked the door behind her.

Grayson moved farther into the room, moving toward the couch, where he looked around. Leaning down, he pressed on the couch cushions. “It’s solid. I’ll get good sleep here.”

“You need a pillow and a blanket,” I said, already going into my bedroom.

“It’s fine,” he said, but I wasn’t going to hear of it. I pulled a spare pillow right off the bed and grabbed one of the extra blankets from the pile in the closet. Then I carried both to Grayson, who was still standing beside the couch.

As he accepted them, his hands brushed mine, and my breath caught in my throat. Such a simple little touch, enough to steal my breath away.

Maybe I was just touch-starved. I hadn’t had any intimate contact in the past five years, and that kiss with Grayson had been the first since our last kiss five years ago. My affection for him still swirled in my heart, making me miss him. Making me want more. Want him.

I reminded myself he was here for the kids’ protection and nothing more, but it would have been so easy to offer for him to sleep in my bed instead of the couch.

All the more reason for me to say goodnight right now.

I opened my mouth, and no words came out. I tried again. Nothing.

“Goodnight, Lily,” Grayson said, and I nodded, relieved.

idn’t run away to my room. It was more of a tactical retreat.

Just before I closed the door, I saw two pairs of curious eyes looking out from behind the children’s door. When I had caught them, they immediately disappeared back into the room, closing the door.

The kids hadn’t been sleeping at all.

Well, I hoped they didn’t get their hopes up. Grayson was here, but that didn’t mean their matchmaking schemes/ had worked. When I finished my mission, we would return to the Lycan Kingdom. Nothing had changed.

I went to my bed, laid down, and tried very hard not to think of how close Grayson was, sleeping just on the other side of my door.
