Chapter 260
Madison’s POV
The day started just like any other day. We were doing math, which was so boring. Alex was into it, but he liked, school. I didn’t hate school, I just liked science better. Math, and numbers in general, were just so boring. I had to try hard to stay awake, knowing I’d get scolded if I fell asleep like I wanted to.
One thing was different than normal though, and that was Tutor Kyle himself. He kept apologizing to us for everything. Spoke too quickly? Apology. Slid a paper across my desk as he was handing it out? Apology. Looked ar me or Alex too long? Apology.
It was starting to get weird. When I looked at Alex and he met my gaze, I knew he felt the same way. Tutor Kyle was just being weird today. Maybe he didn’t get enough sleep or something. I didn’t know. It was strange though.
“It’s almost lunchtime,” Tutor Kyle said.
I was only halfway through my worksheet, though Alex had finished his. Usually he gave me enough time to finish. Was I going to get docked points? I braced myself for a scolding.
“Why don’t we take a break and go for a little field trip?” he said instead.
Instant relief washed over me. “Okay!” I said, pushing my worksheet away.
He shushed me and I shrunk into myself.
“We just have to be quiet, okay? We aren’t supposed to go out, so we don’t want anyone to know,” Tutor Kyle said.
Alex frowned. “If we aren’t supposed to go, then we shouldn’t, right?”
“I say it’s okay,” Tutor Kyle said. “We just don’t want to worry anyone else. You believe me, don’t you?”
He was our tutor and the adult. Alex and I looked at each other.
“Yeah,” Alex said, unsure.
“I’m sorry,” Tutor Kyle said. “I know it seems strange, but you are going to enjoy this. It will be short, but… memorable, I guess. I’m sorry.”
He was over-apologizing again. So weird.
“Wait here a moment,” he said and went to the door. There were guards out there. Grayson said they were going to protect us during the day. But when Tutor Kyle opened the door, the guards seemed to slump down on the floor like they were sleeping.
That… Odette lady was there, the one Mom had told us was dangerous and to stay away from. I was mad at Mom because she wouldn’t let Grayson be our dad. But right now, in this moment, seeing the smirk on Odette’s face, I did feel a flash of fear.
There was something… off… about this lady, and Tutor Kyle didn’t seem to notice. Alex and I did, trading a look.
“Are the kids ready?” Odette asked.
I stood up from my chair and moved closer to Alex. He must have been as nervous as me because when I reached for his hand, he held onto mine really tightly, like he didn’t want to let go.
“Yes,” Tutor Kyle said and turned to us. “Come along, children.”

“N-no,” Alex said. “Not with her.”
With me?” Odette asked gesturing to herself. “What’s wrong with me?”
“Mommy said to stay away from you,” I said.
Odette laughed. “Your mother is just jealous of my close friendship with Prince Grayson.” She batted her eyelashes at Tutor Kyle. “And with Kyle.”
Tutor Kyle seemed to sway into her, like he was pulled into her through some kind of force. This was nothing like the romance scenes from my movies. This felt all wrong. Tutor Kyle looked at Odette like he loved her, but Odette looked at Kyle like she thought he was foolish.
“Come along now,” Odette ordered us. “It’s time to go.
“N-no,” Alex said, gripping my hand.
“Don’t make things difficult,” she said.
“Listen to Odette,” Tutor Kyle said, revealing himself to be just as untrustworthy. “Come along now.”
“We want to ask Mom first,” I said. “Or she’ll worry.”
Odette sighed and looked at Tutor Kyle. “I knew this wasn’t going to work. We do things my way.”
