Madison’s POV

Alex was still asleep when Tutor Kyle crawled toward us. He was holding that knife differently now, like he meant to use it on us. My heart was loud in my ears, and I wanted my Mom so badly that my chest ached. Tears filled my

eyes.

“Don’t,” I whispered. “Please don’t hurt us.”

“I’m sorry,” he said again, and seemed like he was in a trance now. “I have to.”

“W-why?”

“So she’ll love me. This is how I will earn her love.”

“B-but…”

“I’m sorry,” he said and came closer. He lifted the knife, ready to strike.

“No!” I cried out, reaching for Alex, wanting to be near him in the end. My brother. My family. Where was Mom? And Daddy!

Squeezing my eyes shut, I envisioned Grayson bursting in through the door of the shed and saving us. A moment passed and that didn’t happen.

But after another moment, the shed door did burst open. I looked just in time to see some woman I didn’t recognize grab Tutor Kyle by the neck and slam his head against the ground. He went still at once, the knife sliding away. The lady grabbed the knife and tucked it into her belt. Then she looked at us.

I’was grabbing onto Alex’s shoulders, holding on for dear life.

“My name is Ophelia,” she said. “I’m a friend.”

“I want my mom,” I said.

She nodded, “Yes. I will talk you back to them. Come with me.”

“My brother…”

“I’ll carry him.” She moved closer and picked Alex into her arms. I wasn’t going to let her take him anywhere without me so I followed her. We were in the woods somewhere. I didn’t know where, but this lady… Ophelia… she seemed to know. She started to lead me forward.

We went through the woods for a while until we came to a road. Just as we reached it, I heard my mom’s voice.

“Madison! Alex!” She was running, moving beside a massive wolf. That wolf shifted as they came closer, into Grayson. I gasped. Had they been looking for us?
