Chapter 266
inclined to agree,” the Queen said. “While I am pleased to see the children unharmed, we cannot take their word for what happened, especially when they have just endured a traumatic event. Children have such fragile minds and constitutions. I am inclined to believe Odette above anyone else.”
“I continue to object,” Grayson said. “Odette was not the one to save the children.”
“Was it you, Grayson?” the Queen asked. “These wounds seem more restrained than you would deliver.”
“It wasn’t me.”
“Then who?”
Grayson’s jaw clenched. We had already agreed to keep Ophelia’s involvement a secret. Revealing she was alive could send enemies to hunt her. She had risked herself to save the kids. We couldn’t endanger her by naming her
now.
But to withhold that information gave Odette power.
Grayson lowered his head.
“If you don’t know, then we have no reason to doubt Odette’s version of events,” the Queen said. She turned to her husband, who had been sitting on his throne with a thousand-yard stare, present in body but distant in mind. “You agree with my ruling, don’t you dearest?”
“Yes, my love,” the King replied, prompted by her words. His stare remained distant and unfocused. There was no telling if he had any idea what he was actually agreeing to.
Seeing the dynamic between the two, the King and the Queen, it suddenly became very clear who was actually in charge of the kingdom, who was making many of the decisions and getting the King to agree afterwards.
The Queen.
Grayson stared down the King and Queen, but the ruling had been made and everyone’s opinions seemed set. Guards came forward to carry Kyle’s body off, and Odette was given her pardon.
Grayson turned toward the kids and me and ushered us all out of the room. Together, we walked up to the rooms I shared with the kids, each of us lost in our own thoughts. Even the kids were quiet, their fear stealing their voices.
When we arrived at the room, Grayson turned to us. “Start packing. None of us are staying here.”
“Where will we go?” I asked.
