Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 268

Chapter 268

Lilian’s POV

When Grayson returned, he was quiet but rushed. He seemed tense, like a kettle on the stove about to boil over, not out of rage but something else.

I’d only seen Grayson look afraid a handful of times. I wasn’t certain that was what I was seeing this time. His eyes weren’t wide, his pupils not dilated. But he was somewhat jumpy, continuously glancing at the door and tensing like he was ready for a fight.

I was instantly glad that Benedict had left before his return.

“What happened with the Queen?” I asked.

He ignored my question. “Have the children finished packing?”

The kids needed help packing. All they had really managed to do was make a big pile of clothes on the floor. Grayson and I worked together, gathering most of their important things in this room before taking them to the playroom for them to gather their most important toys.

We tried to be subtle, but anyone who walked by and saw suitcases must have been able to guess we were leaving. I made up a whole lie in my head, about us going on a trip, somewhere to search for Teacher. But no one asked.

The servants were too proper to ask me in front of Grayson. And the others? I worried they wanted me gone. Why get in the way?

Or maybe they didn’t ask because Grayson was staring down anyone who got too close.

“Grayson,” I whispered, when he had glared at someone on the way to the car. “Would you please tell me what happened with the Queen?”

“Not here,” he replied.

With the servants help, we loaded our suitcases in the trunk and the kids into the backseat. Grayson insisted on no driver, that he himself would drive us where we needed to be. Then we entered the car and he drove us away.

To my surprise, it seemed like we were going out of the city. I shot a confused glance at Grayson but he replied with a warning one.

Not here.

Did he think there was some kind of listening device in the car? Maybe there was. Or maybe he still wasn’t ready to talk. Either way, I stayed quiet about our plans, either chatting with the kids about nothing in particular, or looking out the window at the passing scenery.

Grayson drove out of the city and down several main roads, before turning onto backstreets. Eventually, he stopped the car in a small motel parking lot. The clean black sedan was somewhat noticeable in a parking lot full of older cars.

He got out, and I did too. He pointed at the older model sedan that he had parked beside. Without his saying, I knew we were changing cars, and helped the kids move as he took care of the luggage.

“Why are we changing cars, Mommy?” Alex asked, thankfully once we were out of the first car. If there was a listening device in there, it wouldn’t have picked up the question.

“Think of it like a game,” I told them. “We are going to pretend to be someone else.”

“Oh!” Madison said, perking up. “Like spies?”

eeded to more closely monitor what shows she was watching, but for now, I said, “Yes. Like spies.”

The kids immediately latched onto this game, both pretending to be cool secret agents.

“We need to come up with codenames!” Madison advised.

“Bags are loaded,” Grayson said, looking around. He seemed even tenser in the open like this. “We should go.

“Come on, secret agents,” I told the kids. “This car will take you to your next assignment.”

The kids played along at once, immediately hopping into the car.

Grayson and I entered the front, and Grayson drove us away from the motel, back toward the city. His hands were tight on the steering wheel, his knuckles white.
