Lilian’s POV

I was rendered totally speechless, my heart a mix of hurt and anger. Yet before I could voice either, Grayson continued.

“I have no intention of marrying Odette,” he said. “The Queen made an ultimatum. Either I marry Odette, or she would make Odette the heir. She flexed her power over the King right in front of me, making it clear I had no choice.”

“If you have no choice, how can you say you won’t marry her?”

“I will find another way before then,” he said.

“But for now you will go along with it?”

“It’s not something that I want, Lily.” He looked at me, into me, as if peering all the way to my soul. His eyes were filled with emotion, and I saw love there, even if I didn’t fully trust it in this moment. “My heart has only ever been yours.”

More than anything, I wanted to believe that. I wanted to accept his love and love him in return. Go right back to how things were before we had been torn apart the first time.

But that wasn’t possible.

Maybe he had no intention of marrying Odette, but would he really be able to find another way to stop this? To go against the Queen, the King?

Lillian had been gone twenty minutes now and I couldn’t bring myself to go back to work or to go to bed. Instead, I stood by the desk in my office, staring down into the crackling flames of my fireplace, watching as they slowly dwindled. I could have stoked them with the poker to keep the fire going, but I didn’t. I didn’t move at all, frozen to the spot.
