Chapter 277

till believed my pardon would come. As Gamma, I was a vital figure in this pack. Even if my daughter wouldn’t speak for me, surely the royal family would act on my behalf. They wouldn’t just allow this execution to happen, no matter what kind of display they had to put on for the public.

I would be saved in the end. I was sure of it.

Sometime later, the cell door opened, and I already knew it was someone coming to save me. I was surprised it wasn’t my daughter again, back to apologize, but I was even more pleased as the Queen herself stepped into my jail cell, with some of her guard beside her.

She looked around my shabby cell with distaste, and I couldn’t blame her. Fortunately, I knew she was about to save me from such rabble.

I bowed deeply before her to show my respect as well as my gratitude in advance.

“My Queen. Your presence is most welcome. I am flattered you took the time to come here yourself when you could have simply sent a message with a pardon.”

As I straightened, I saw that the Queen’s expression hadn’t changed. The same distasteful look she had worn while she scanned the room, she continued to wear as she looked down at me.

“What did you tell Lillian and Prince Grayson when they came to see you?” she asked, her voice devoid of emotion.

“I told them nothing,” I said. “She only wanted to know silly things anyway, like if I loved her or her mother. Who could care about such things? Such a foolish girl.”

“You face the gallows tomorrow,” the Queen said. “As you are a coward, you might cry out in fear. You might cast shadow on those too bright to be darkened.”

“I-I would never give away any secrets, my Queen. Even in my most challenging moments, I -”

“You are a coward,” she said again, no less insulting a second time.

If she was anyone other than the Queen, I would have slapped her. As she was the Queen, I could only bear her words with grit teeth and my own burning inner rage.

“You will scream at the end. You will beg. I cannot allow this. You know too much, and could reveal too much.”

“So you are pardoning me?” I asked. It made sense. I was too valuable to rot away in jail or to allow to die in such a grizzly way. Of course, she would pardon me. Nothing else made sense.

The Queen looked at me for a moment more, then gestured for one of her guards to move forward. “Cut out his tongue,” she commanded.

I stumbled back. “Now wait a minute!”
