Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 283

Chapter 283

Princess Josephine, I’m so sorry,” I told her. “I never stopped considering you a friend. Even if you don’t want to be friends with me after what I’ve done, I still value the friendship that we had.”

Her bottom lip trembled, so she held it with her teeth a moment. Her eyes filled with tears. But then she hardened again, shaking her head, brushing off any show of weakness.

“I could forgive if you only hurt me,” she said. “But when you left, Grayson became like a different person. He walked around like a zombie, totally lost.”

“Josie,” Grayson said, covering his face with his hand.

“It’s because you were gone that Odette became so impossible to deal with, swooping in like she was destined to be queen,” Josie continued, ignoring the embarrassment of her brother. “If you had stayed, you and Grayson would have gotten married, and none of this would be happening.”

The words stung, hitting me like a million tiny spikes thrown straight at my heart.

“I’m sorry, I-” I started.

“Don’t be sorry,” Josie said. “Just promise you are staying this time. Or are you just here to leave again?”

“I told you,” Grayson said. “She’s only here to find Teacher. Leave her be, Josie.”

“I won’t. Not after all she’s done to hurt you.”

“I’m sorry -”

“You were friends,” Grayson said. “I don’t need you to defend me.”

“It’s what sisters do!”

“I didn’t mean to come between you,” I said. “Please don’t fight.”

Josie looked at me, searing me with her gaze. Then with a huff, she said, “Please leave, Lily. I’m not ready to speak with you yet.” Then in a flourish, she turned and walked back to her party, half of which was openly staring at me now, suspicion and dislike clear in their glances.

I wrapped my arms around myself. “I’ll wait in the car,” I said to Grayson and turned. Before I could take two steps, his hand was on the small of my back, guiding me out of the throne room. “You should stay,” I said. “ Reconnect with Josie.”

“I don’t really want to talk to her until we’ve both cooled down. I don’t like the things she said to you.”

“She had a right to say those things.”

“She didn’t,” he insisted.

As we neared the front door, I slowed to a stop. He paused beside me.
