Chapter 284
Lillian’s POV
Seeing that I was distracted, Grayson started to turn. As soon as he did, Teacher darted around the corner.
“W-wait!” I cried out and started running.
“Lily?” Grayson called, but then darted after me.
He stayed close on my heels as I chased Teacher, moving around the corner where I had seen him disappear. Just as I did, I saw him duck around another corner. I picked up the pace. Grayson stayed with me.
Around that corner, I saw Teacher disappear into one of the rooms. When I reached it, the door was closed. Odd.I hadn’t seen Teacher touch a door or heard it closing. But he was powerful and mysterious. He could have closed the door without making a sound, possibly.
I reached for the handle. I could barely think where we were. I didn’t know whose room this even was, or what could be waiting behind this door. But knowing Teacher could be there, in this moment, I didn’t care either. I turned the handle and pushed the door open, rushing inside.
The room was empty. I scanned wall to wall, but unless someone was hiding behind the desk, no one was here.
This was an office, but it seemed sparse and unused. I’d never been here before, nor had I seen anyone entering here. I walked around the desk and peered beneath it, just to be sure. Nothing.
Teacher wasn’t here.
“This is the Queen’s office, Lily,” Grayson said. “What were you hoping to find in here?”
“The Queen?”
“Yes.” Grayson gave me a critical look. “What are you looking for?”
Between the dreams and the visions, first seeing Teacher at my father’s execution and now this, I was somewhat embarrassed to say. But I had to. Without any explanation Grayson might come to suspect me of something, and despite everything, I still yearned for his approval.
“I saw Teacher again, running through the hallways,” I said. “He came in here.”
“I didn’t sense anything,” Grayson said.
Not for the first time, I started to feel like maybe I was losing my mind. I had been through a lot since coming back here. And seeing my father die, even though he was a terrible person, might have been enough to push me over the edge.
Grayson swallowed hard, like he wasn’t sure what to do with me.
“He was there,” I said.
“Okay.” He didn’t argue, and I couldn’t tell if he wanted to or not. He’d seemed to lock his true feelings up tightly.
I didn’t have time to convince him more thoroughly. We weren’t supposed to be in this room, I knew that. We should just leave before we were found in here. And yet, in my heart, I felt a nagging sensation. Something like a whisper I couldn’t quite hear.
Something that felt like… Teacher was here.

I couldn’t see him, so it made no sense. But what about any of this had made sense?
The visions, the dreams, even Teacher himself was beyond normal understanding. Was it truly impossible to consider that he, a magical man, might be contained by magical means?
Without pause, I started searching through the drawers on the desk.
Grayson, seeing what I was doing, quickly closed the door to the room. Then he came closer to me. “What are you looking for?”
“A prison,” I said.
With only a slight amount of confusion on his face, he went to the other side of the desk and began opening the drawers.
The ones I looked through were mostly office supplies – pens, blank papers, paper clips, a stapler. None of these items gave me any kind of feelings.
Grayson, meanwhile, paused when he opened the final drawer. “Lily,” he said, a weight in his voice.
