For too long, I had been willing to go along with the Queen’s whims, worried about losing my place in succession. I’d only done this to buy myself time to think of another way to secure my path to the throne.

But now… Though I loved my kingdom, and wanted to be the King, there was a different path that I wanted even

more.

I wanted my family.

Though I was still determined to fight for both the kingdom and my family, I knew that in agreeing to marry Odette, even if false, I was adding strain to the already tumultuous relationship I shared with Lily. I wasn’t showing her that she is the true owner of my heart, and that this would never change.

It hadn’t in the past five years during her absence. My feelings for her were as strong now as they had been when had stood, ready to marry her. That love wasn’t going anywhere. These feelings weren’t going to diminish. Not even with my death. I’d carry my love for her into the beyond.

So I stood my ground, stared at the Queen, and said what I had said.

I didn’t back down, even as the Queen’s ire grew stronger, more furious. She glared at me with fire in her eyes, looking like she might try to destroy me if she could. I was ready for her. She wouldn’t succeed no matter what she tried.

“Don’t make foolish choices, Grayson,” she snapped. “The entire kingdom’s future depends on you being smart about this.”

Ignoring her, I held out my hand for Lillian. She accepted it, clasping tightly. Then, we walked around the Queen and toward the door.

“You will regret this, Grayson! You can’t possibly want to throw your whole future away!”

I wasn’t throwing anything away. Because I made this choice, I was holding onto the one thing that mattered. But I didn’t have to explain myself to her or to anyone else.

Holding Lily’s hand, I lead her out of the room and down the hallway, away from the shrieking queen who continued to chastise me. I totally tuned her out now, not listening to her vitriolic words. Her intent was clear enough.
